Xiaomi’s “Ferrari” Smartphone Could Be Called the Mi 4i, Launching Next Week

Xiaomi will be announcing its next smartphone outside of China for the first time ever next week, and chances are it will be the rumoured “Ferrari” smartphone that popped up late last month. Interestingly, signs are pointing it to be the cheaper Mi 4 smartphone, which may be called the Mi 4i come launch day.

The Xiaomi smartphone codenamed “Ferrari” first appeared about three weeks ago, where at the same time rumours of a plastic, more affordable variant of the Mi 4 appeared. At the time it was said that this device may be known as the E4, but according to an entry in the Singapore Infocomm Development Authority (IDA) database, this device may in fact be known as the Mi 4i.

In addition, Soyacincau also found that the Mi 4i has benchmark results posted on Geekbench, where it was revealed that the Mi 4i will pack a Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 octa-core chipset running at 1.65GHz and 2GB of RAM. From the earlier “Ferrari” entry, it may be that the Mi 4i will also pack a 4.9-inch Full HD display, 13MP rear and 5MP front cameras.

Interestingly, this Mi 4i may also be running Android 5.0 out of the box, which indicates that Xiaomi may also be announcing the Lollipop update for MIUI 6 at its 23 April event next week.

Speaking of which, the fact that this launch will be held in New Delhi has its own significance, too. A global launch event that will not be held in China is likely an indication that the event will showcase a device that’s built for the international market, unlike the Mi 4 which was still a flagship designed for the Chinese market – a primary factor behind Xiaomi’s decision to release it only in very few international markets.

In any case, this is shaping up to be a very interesting announcement. We’ll be on site for the launch event next week, so stay tuned!
