Cyanogen Ends Partnership with OnePlus; “Without Cyanogen, Oneplus Would Have Sold Like One Device”

Cyanogen’s Kirt McMaster and Steve Kondik have officially confirmed that it is no longer in partnership with OnePlus. Both of them believe that the Chinese company’s goals are no longer in line with Cyanogen’s, and it is currently looking for another manufacturer who can “scale much quicker” than OnePlus.

The end of this partnership isn’t exactly surprising. OnePlus and Cyanogen had a rocky relationship ever since the legal dispute in India caused the OnePlus One smartphone to be banned in the country. That being said, Cyanogen still wishes OnePlus the best, but not without saying a thing or two:

Without Cyanogen, OnePlus would have sold like one device in international market. Essentially they built their brand on the back of Cyanogen. – Chief Executive Officer of Cyanogen, Kirt McMaster

It’s very evident that McMaster is not happy with its partnership with OnePlus or the way that it ended either. He then adds that “OnePlus shipped reasonable volume, but nothing compared to what some of these other partners can ship. So we are working with partners that can scale much quicker.” More likely than not, Cyanogen will partner with another Chinese manufacturer.

In any case, OnePlus was clearly prepared for this. It already has OxygenOS to take the place of Cyanogen OS, although it seems like Cyanogen will keep supporting the OnePlus One seeing how it has released Cyanogen OS 12 for it.
