While the numbers surrounding the Samsung Galaxy S6’s camera sound impressive enough, I remember this time last year when Samsung was equally vocal about the Galaxy S5’s camera. As it turns out, one of the best features from the Galaxy Note 4 has been transferred into the Galaxy S6.
One of the very first questions I asked about the Samsung Galaxy S6’s camera was about its sensor. At the launch event, nobody could confirm it, and all were happy to just say it was “a new sensor”. Finally, thanks to some code-running by Phone Arena on a Galaxy S6 display unit, that answer can be laid to rest: yes, Samsung has again chosen the IMX 240 sensor for the Galaxy S6 – and that can only be great news for Samsung.
The S5 had used Samsung’s own ISOCELL sensor which was good, but nowhere near as good as it should be. The Galaxy Note 4 saw Samsung using a high-end Sony IMX 240 16MP sensor paired with Samsung’s Smart OIS, and it was easily one of the main reasons I really, really liked the Note 4. Paired with the Note 4’s speedy hardware, the Note 4 was one of, if not the best smartphone camera of 2014.
With even faster hardware powering the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge, Samsung’s latest flagships are almost certainly going to be great shooters – unless the company royally screws it up with its software. But, as you can see in our sample images taken just a few hours ago, I’m genuinely excited to take the camera out for an extensive spin.
