Samsung Galaxy S6 & Galaxy S6 edge Coming to Malaysia “in Mid-April”

Now that Samsung’s Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge has officially been announced, the countdown officially begins as to when these two smartphones will make their way here in Malaysia. While twenty unnamed countries will be getting the first wave of the devices’ availability on April 10, what about Malaysia?

After the Galaxy Unpacked launch event here in Barcelona, Lee Jui Siang, the Vice President for IT, Mobile and Digital Imaging for Samsung Malaysia Electronics gave some positive news about the arrival of Samsung’s latest flagship smartphones in Malaysia. “We won’t be very far off from April 10…we’re aiming for a launch in mid-April,” Lee said.

As Samsung has consistently demonstrated, its mammoth-sized distribution network allows it to ship its latest products simultaneously in many countries. The Galaxy S5 and Note 4 both arrived in Malaysia in less than two months after its global launch, and with the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge, it looks like Samsung is working hard to deliver it even faster than before.

But, there is no chance that the new smartphones will arrive in Malaysia before the nationwide implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), which is pegged at 6% – that is easily an additional RM150 for a smartphone that retails for RM2,500. Speaking of which, Lee also noted that the retail prices of the Galaxy S6 will roughly follow the standard retail prices of its current flagship devices, while the Galaxy S6 edge will be priced at a slight premium from the Galaxy S6.

Meanwhile, SamMobile has reported that the European RRP of the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge will start from €699 (about RM2,820) and €849 (about RM3,430), respectively. It must be noted that European prices are generally higher than other retail prices around the world, but one thing seems to be quite certain: the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge may not come cheap when it arrives in Malaysia.
