NVIDIA has unveiled the GeForce GTX Titan X, the most powerful GPU that it has ever made. While details are sketchy at the moment, it appears that this will be one of those graphics cards that most of us will never be able to afford.

The Titan X runs on the new Maxwell architecture, has eight billion transistors -up from the seven billion on the current Titan Z – and 12GB of VRAM. That is essentially all that is known about the GPU for now. NVIDIA CEO, Jen-Hsun Huang, said that more details will be revealed in two weeks at NVIDIA’s GPU Technology Conference.

Huang revealed the Titan X during the demonstration of Thief In The Shadows, a new VR experience from Oculus, Epic Games, and Weta Workshop. The game has players sneaking around the Smaug’s cave from the Hobbit. NVIDIA is saying that the VR revolution will require a greater amount of graphics power, and has built the Titan X to provide the necessary GPU to make the experience worthwhile.

Just how much better this new GPU is over its predecessor is difficult to say without more information. There is no boost in VRAM over the Titan Z, although it is likely that NVIDIA tweaked everything else to make it tempting to gamers.
