CES 2015: ASUS Launches ZenFone Zoom, A Photography Oriented Smartphone

ASUS ZenFone Zoom

Perhaps the most surprising new product of all during ASUS’ CES 2015 press conference earlier today is the ASUS ZenFone Zoom. Made for photography-oriented users, you might be able to guess its purpose right away thanks to the huge camera module at the back…which bears an uncanny resemblance to the Nokia Lumia 1020. However, interestingly enough, there is no gigantic camera sensor inside the device.

Instead, the ZenFone Zoom is equipped with a 13-megapixel sensor for its rear camera – rather modest considering the phone’s design. That being said, the camera is equipped with a 10-element lens as well as 3x optical zoom capability, Optical Image Stabilization and laser auto-focus which might explain the rather large lens area on the device. There is also dual-color Real Tone Xenon flash located next to the camera.

It would appear that the entire rear camera’s spec list (including its design) has been inspired by the best smartphone cameras that have been released in recent years.

As for the front camera on the ZenFone Zoom, it is built with a 5-megapixel sensor and has a 88-degrees F2.0 lens. ASUS PixelMaster technology is also present on the device but for those who prefer to tweak their settings individually, they can do so via the Manual mode.

ASUS ZenFone Zoom

Curiously, ASUS somehow decided not to reveal the processor and amount of RAM that have been equipped into the ZenFone Zoom, although the company did state that the smartphone might have up to 128GB worth of internal storage space. Nevertheless, quite a number of characteristics on the device are similar to the ZenFone 2 such as the 5.5-inch full HD IPS display, the latest iteration of ZenUI on Android 5.0, a 3000mAh battery, and support for LTE Cat 4.

The new ASUS ZenFone Zoom is scheduled for release some time in the second quarter of 2015 with a price tag of US$399 (RM 1,418). Like other products that ASUS announced at its CES 2015 media briefing earlier today, the availability of this very interesting device in Malaysia is not yet known at the moment.
