For many people, the name Meizu or Flyme will draw some pretty blank looks. For those in the know, a very convincing rumour that Meizu will be coming to Malaysia will be very exciting news.

Meizu is yet another smartphone company from China, and it appears the company is following some of its competitors by expanding its business beyond the Great Wall. All of its smartphones run on the company’s Flyme OS, a custom ROM that’s based on Android, bringing plenty of customisation options and features that differentiate it from other Android devices.

Its latest flagship, the MX4 is a beast of a smartphone. It’s powered by MediaTek’s extremely powerful MT6595 octa-core chipset, comprising of four 2.2GHz Cortex-A17 cores and four 1.7GHz Cortex-A7. Besides that, the MX4 packs an odd 5.36-inch 1920 x 1152 IPS display (5:3 aspect ratio), 2GB RAM, up to 64GB storage, and a 3100mAh battery. There’s even a massive Sony IMX 220 20.7MP rear camera sensor paired with dual-tone LED flash, while the front shooter is a 2MP unit. Plus, the MX4 – which has very strong iPhone influences in its design – is made from “high-tech aircraft grade aluminium”. In China, the 64GB MX4 retails for around RM1300.

That being said, initial reviews of the MX4 have not been great.

Nevertheless this device definitely ticks all the right boxes to pique our interest, and the existence of a Meizu Malaysia Facebook page lends more credence to our initial source’s claims some months back that the company will make its way here soon. Until then, we’ll keep our ears close to the ground.
