Samsung Malaysia will officially launch the Galaxy Alpha next Friday, 19 September. Invites have just been sent out to members of the media, while Samsung has already begun teasing the device via its social media channels.
The Galaxy Alpha is Samsung’s first Galaxy smartphone featuring a metal frame, giving a much-needed premium feel to the company’s notorious reputation for producing cheap-feeling devices. The added rigidity also adds to the Alpha’s build quality, making it one of the most solid-feeling Samsung smartphones ever made.
On top of that, the Alpha also packs the Exynos 5430, the world’s first system-on-chip (SoC) built on the 20nm process, which promises greater efficiency and battery life. In fact, there are two variants of the Galaxy Alpha, with the other variant using a more traditional Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chipset. Other aspects of the hardware remain the same, including 2GB of RAM, a 4.7-inch 720p Super AMOLED display, 12MP rear and 2.1MP front cameras, and a rather small 1860mAh battery. Also, the Alpha is just 6.7mm thick, and weighs a surprisingly light 115g.
The Galaxy Alpha will be available in four colours (Sleek Silver, Charcoal Black, Frosted Gold and Scuba Blue) though Samsung has not confirmed which colours will be coming to Malaysia next week; there is no indication of any retail price either. However, as part of the Alpha’s launch, Samsung will be offering a free Gear 2 smartwatch for the first 100 customers who purchases the Galaxy Alpha – but there is little information to go by in terms of the mechanics.
