Sony has not announced a full sized tablet to go along with the new Xperia Z3. Instead it has opted to jump straight to the compact version of a tablet with the newly announced Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact. It’s still more powerful than it’s predecessor, while still managing to squeeze everything into an 8-inch form factor.
Inside the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact is a Snapdragon 801 processor with 3GB of RAM, and no information about the internal storage or presence of MicroSD expansion slots. However, it does have an 8.1-megapixel rear camera and 2.2-megapixel front facing camera.
Sony is hailing this as the thinnest and most powerful waterproof tablet in the world at the moment. At 6.4-mm of thickness it has a reasonable claim to the title. Although Sony did not reveal the level of waterproofing that went into any of the new Z3 devices; instead opting to state that it is the highest level achieved by a smartphone/tablet yet.
Interestingly enough, the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact is also capable of the PlayStation 4 Remote Play; which makes this the first tablet with the capability. Essentially, it allows users to stream games from their PS4 to the tablet and use it as a display instead of the TV. It is also capable of a wireless connection to the Dual Shock 4 controller and even has a special mount to connect it directly to the controller.
The Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact will be arriving in stores this autumn.
