iPhone 6 Bend Test by Apple

Apple has finally responded to the whole “bendgate” fiasco and it looks like things isn’t as bad as we all thought. Even though pictures and videos of bendable iPhone 6 Plus’ have been making headlines around the internet, Apple says that they have only received 9 complaints so far, out of over 10 million total iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus sold.

The company even invited several media into their test lab to see how an iPhone 6/iPhone 6 Plus gets pushed, twisted and crushed before they are released to the public.

Re/code was one of the publications invited and in their video, you can see how an iPhone 6 Plus goes through a series of torture tests. According to Phil Schiller, Vice President of Apple’s Worldwide Marketing, said that the new iPhones are made with high-grade aluminum, the “strongest glass in the industry”, and has stainless steel and titanium insert to strengthen its body.

Recode iPhone 6 Plus Sit Test by Apple

Before the iPhones gets released, about 15,000 iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus were put through an exhaustive testing process. Some of the test shown by Apple includes putting 25kg weight onto the iPhone 6 Plus on both hard and soft surface. This test is to stimulate a person sitting on the phone and after “thousands of times”, the phone will remain unscathed. Other tests includes a three-point bend test that is probably the most relevant to the bend test we saw earlier, a pressure point test and a torsion test. The result? Check out re/code’s video below:

Apple says that more tests are done on each phone but these are the only ones they will unveil. So why does the iPhone 6 Plus still bend? According to Dan Riccio, the Senior Vice President of Apple’s Hardware Engineering says that in certain cases, if users apply a lot of stress beyond a natural point of deformation, the phone can “take a set”.
