Samsung Officially Launches the Galaxy Alpha in Russia…Or Did It?

Now this is a first. Samsung appears to have officially launched the Galaxy Alpha in a glitzy event in Russia – only to deny its existence by pulling down all references to the launch.

But, anything that is on the Internet stays on the Internet, and images from the launch can still be found online. It appears that the device was a prominent feature at the fancy yachting event, where Samsung was the main sponsor – as these images show:

Oddly, official news feeds and images of the particular event has been taken down, and no mention of the event can be found anywhere on the company’s social media channels.

With the somewhat official launch of the Samsung Galaxy Alpha, it is safe to say we have enough information to put the device’s spec sheet together. The phone will house an Exynos 5 octa-core chipset, a 4.7-inch 720p Super AMOLED display screen, 32GB of non-expandable memory, and Android 4.4.4 running out of the box. In addition, the Galaxy Alpha will pack a 12MP sensor for the main camera, and 2.1MP front-facing camera sensor, while a small-ish 1850-mAh battery round off the list.

The most interesting aspect of the Samsung Galaxy Alpha is with the metal frame, making it the first in Samsung’s device roster. But, the back will retain the perforated design found on the Galaxy S5.

It had been rumoured that the Galaxy Alpha would be announced last week, while other sources point to an official announcement on August 13. But, with Samsung’s big IFA event coming in less than a month, it is likely that we will be seeing the device at the Samsung Unpacked Event at IFA 2014 coming this September.

[Update] Some images can still be found at the PROyachting Facebook page, which clearly shows the Galaxy Alpha name.
