In a move that has been expected by many tech pundits throughout the world, Microsoft last year has announced its plan to acquire the Devices and Services business of Nokia which is the home to Nokia’s Smart Devices and Mobile Phones units. Apparently, Microsoft has decided to name the new division as Microsoft Mobile according to the leaked e-mails that Nokia has sent to its customers and suppliers.
The e-mail also stated that Microsoft Mobile is a full subsidiary of Microsoft Corporation and its full name – Microsoft Mobile Oy – further indicates so. For those who are curious, Oy is the abbreviation for osakeyhtiö which is equivalent to what we Malaysians known as Sendirian Berhad (Sdn Bhd) or Limited Liability Company (LLC) in UK.
This is opposed to the publicly-listed Nokia Corporation or Nokia Oyj as it is officially named in Finland. Oyj is the abbreviation for julkinen osakeyhtiö which as you might able to guess is equivalent to Berhad (Bhd) in Malaysia or Public Limited Company (PLC) in UK. Microsoft Mobile will continue to be based at Espoo, Finland which is the current home town of Nokia Corporation.
That being said, Microsoft Mobile’s office will not be inside Nokia HQ for obvious reason. So far, Microsoft Corporation itself has yet to make any announcement regarding this matter but we expect it to be made once the acquisition is sealed for good.
UPDATE (1024pm 21 April): Microsoft has confirmed that the Nokia’s Devices and Service acquisition will be fully completed on Friday, 25 April.
