The Best Flappy Birds Alternatives, and Where to Find Them

It’s been about a week since Flappy Bird creator, Dong Nguyen, removed his famous fun yet annoying game from the Google Play Store and Apple App Store, giving up an estimated daily earnings of USD$50,000. Many clones were made since then and not just for Android and iOS devices, but also for smartwatches, Windows 8 as well as for your web browser. While both Google and Apple have announced that they are no longer accepting apps that are misleading (apps that contains the name “Flappy”) into their respective app stores, some of them are still available. Check out the best alternatives we’ve seen so far after the break.

For Your Smartphone

Flappy Mamak (Android) – Yup, you read that right. Who can say no to Flappy Bird with a local touch? Seriously, Flappy Mamak! Float in the KL skyline with your roti canai dough, and avoid the stacked cups of teh tarik!

Be warned, though, that the app is about ten times larger than the original Flappy Bird, and the in-game ads are a lot more intrusive.

Flappy Mamak

Clumsy Bird (Android) – I actually like this one. Clumsy Bird looks just like Flappy Bird but with much nicer graphics – a bird with a beak instead of what looks like swollen lips, and chopped up tree trunks instead of pipes.

Farty Bird (Android) – Why flap your wings when you can fart to stay afloat? Farty Bird’s gameplay is slightly different, where instead of flying through pipes, Farty Bird has to keep farting so it won’t get electrocuted by electric fences on the top and bottom.

Splashy Fish (iOS/Android)– Like Flappy Bird, but Splashy Fish is a fish with fat lips.

Ironpants (iOS/Android) – Need I say more?

For Your Smartwatch

Tiny Bird – if your phone’s screen is too big for you, you can always play Tiny Bird on your Pebble smartwatch. Because you can.

For Your Browser

Flappy Wings – Play Flappy Wings on none other than KiZi, a famous online gaming platform that is filled with lots of games.

Flappy Wings

FlapMMO – imagine playing Flappy Bird with other people at the same time. Now, imagine playing Flappy Bird with a lot of people at the same time, and you get FlapMMO. Available on your browser, you can see hundreds of fat-lipped birds flapping about in real-time and crashing into pipes before falling down, with each pipe even showing the amount of “casualties”. It is pretty fun and mesmerizing I must say, but a whole lot harder as there is so much going on on the screen.

FlappyDoge – Looks almost exactly like Flappy Bird, but instead of a bird the game features the titular Doge meme dog. The dog also has a very cute tail that I assume is what he uses to fly. Be warned, though: the controls are a little…laggy.

Flappy DogeThis is impossible, I can’t even get through ONE pipe. Impossible.

In case you missed out on the Flappy Bird saga, when the app was first discovered, it skyrocketed to the top apps charts in both the Google Play Store and Apple App Store, but was removed shortly after. The developer, Dong Nguyen, was estimated to be making USD$50,000 a day from ads alone, but the Vietnamese developer said he had to remove it for your own good. Since then, he has been reported to be given death threats and some sites even falsely reported that he has committed suicide along with some other fans.

All the clones were made shortly after to capitalize on the craze, but with different characters and maybe even better graphics. They all feature similar gameplay but if you wish to try some of them out, do be careful though, it has been reported that some of them are malicious apps that attempts to gain access to your devices, while some were also reported to send premium-rate text messages, causing unwanted charges on a user’s phone bill.

Moreover, these apps are all ad-supported, and given that these are pretty much apps that are ripping off Nguyen’s app (that Nguyen may have been inspired by other elements is another argument altogether), you’re essentially giving the developers behind these apps free revenue – which may be something to consider when downloading these apps.

Nevertheless, if you’ve played and enjoyed any of the Flappy Bird alternatives out there, let us know your top picks in the comments below!
