Motorola Announces the Moto G: Mid-Range Specs at Entry-Level Prices

Motorola has announced its latest smartphone, the Moto G. The device, which was leaked earlier this month, managed to stay under wraps pretty well, too: almost every rumoured specification on the Moto G proved to be false, with the actual specs proving to be a pretty decent mid-range device.

The Moto G is powered by a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 1.2GHz processor with 1GB of RAM, with 8GB of non-expandable storage (a 16GB variant is available). The device also sports a “best-in-class” 4.5-inch 1280 x 720 LCD display, as well as a 5MP rear camera and 1.3MP front-facing module. On top of that, there’s a 2070mAh battery in the 11.6mm and 143g chassis, which mirrors the design language of the flagship Moto X. Software-wise, the Moto G is powered by an unskinned version of Android 4.3, and Motorola has guaranteed that it will be updated to Android 4.4. Like the Moto X, the Moto G will also come with optional coloured back covers.

Amazingly, Motorola is pricing the Moto G at an unbelievable $179 ($199 for the 16GB variant) off-contract. Under today’s exchange rates, the Moto G could cost as little as RM580, which is unheard of given its specs. Even more amazing is that Motorola claims that it is still making a profit for the smartphone, which is aimed at emerging markets. It will be available in Brazil and parts of Europe this week, and Latin America and Canada in the next few weeks. The Moto G will also be available in the US, the Middle East, India and other parts of Asia in early January, with the company aiming to make the Moto G available in over 30 countries by 2014.
