Intel Bay Trail Launch @ IDF 2013

Previously known as the “Bay Trail-T”, Intel have officially announced the new Atom Z3000 series just as the second day of Intel Developer Forum 2013 in San Francisco begins. Based on the Silvermont architecture, the new low-power SoC is said to offer double the computing performances and triple the graphics performances over previous generation Atom processors.

For starters, the Intel Atom Z3000 series are divided into two sub-series: one being the Atom Z3700 quad-core processors that are meant for both Android and Windows while another one is the Atom Z3600 dual-core processors which are designed only for Android. A total of six different processors will be initially available:

On the graphics side of things, the Intel Atom Z3000 processors are equipped with Intel HD Graphics GPU which supports resolutions of up to 2560×1600 as well as DirectX 11, Intel Quick Sync Video and Intel Wireless Display. Intel also claimed that the Atom Z3000-based devices are able to have up to 10 hours of active battery life together with three weeks of stand-by time.

Consumers should be able to see Atom Z3000-based products from OEMs such as Acer, ASUS, Dell, Lenovo and Toshiba starting from Q4 2013 with a price tag that is from as low as RM 648 (USD 199). These products will come in various sizes from 7 to 11.6-inches with form factors that as thin as 8mm and under 0.45kg (1lb).

If you wonder how the Atom Z3000 series performs, check out our video of Bay Trail prototypes in action back at Computex 2013 in Taipei earlier this year.
