Facebook has recently opened up its report of government requests for user data worldwide and guess what? It looks like our local government have been requesting for personal information of some Facebook users. Facebook listed Malaysia in the Global Government Requests Report, showing that Putrajaya has requested 7 times for information on 197 users but none of them have been approved.
The report, available on Facebook, is Facebook’s aim at providing transparency and trust to users. They have listed out all the requests from each country, the number of requests received from each of those countries, the number of users and the percentage of user data that are given. It covers the first 6 months of 2013, ending in 30 June.
We hope this report will be useful to our users in the ongoing debate about the proper standards for government requests for user information in official investigations. And while we view this compilation as an important first report – it will not be our last.
