Facebook, along with several companies, today announced the launch of internet.org, a global partnership with the goal of making internet available for everyone around the globe. Announced by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, the social networking company will partner with Ericsson, Nokia, Qualcomm, Mediatek, Opera and Samsung to bring internet connectivity to the rest of the world. To date, only a third of the world’s population are connected and Facebook wish to connect the rest of the 5 billion.
All the companies will get together to develop joint projects, share knowledge, and mobilize industry and governments to bring the world online. In order to do that, internet.org will focus on three key challenges in developing countries. Affordability – make cheaper internet and good quality devices, better data efficiency – partners will focus on compression and such to use less bandwidth, and helping businesses drive access – work on business models that makes it easier for people access the internet such as working with mobile operators and device manufacturers.
