Sony Mobile Malaysia has officially announced the arrival of the company’s giant new smartphone, the Xperia Z Ultra. Launched at the end of June at the 2013 Mobile Asia Expo in Shanghai, the Xperia Z Ultra further blurs the lines between a smartphone and a tablet, with its 6.44-inch display.

The first smartphone in Malaysia to feature the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 2.2GHz quad-core processor, the Xperia Z Ultra sports a gigantic 6.44-inch Full HD Triluminos display (the same tech that powers Sony’s latest range of BRAVIA TVs). There’s 2GB of RAM as well as 16GB of memory that is user-expandable up to 64GB microSD cards. This Android 4.2.2-running phablet is also rated IP58 for water and dust resistance, on top of being the world’s slimmest Full HD device at 6.5mm.

In terms of camera, there’s a 8MP rear shooter and a 2MP front-facing module. Curiously, the rear camera does not have any accompanying flash, so low-light photography may not be a big feature on the Xperia Z Ultra. The smartphone also packs in a 3000mAh battery pack, along with the usual wireless connectivity options such as WiFi, Bluetooth, and NFC.

The Sony Xperia Z Ultra officially goes on sale today at all Sony Centres and authorised retail outlets at a retail price of RM2299 – although some Malaysians have been able to purchase it at select Sony Centre outlets in the Klang Valley since last week. It is important to note, though, that the current model on sale does not support LTE. The rumour mills are suggesting that the LTE variant may be making its way here sometime in September, however.
