Late last night Burger King’s official Twitter account was hacked. The hackers obviously had a sense of humour, as it changed the page’s display photo to a McDonalds logo, complete with a McDonald’s product as the background image. In its first tweet on the page, the hackers tweeted to more than 80000 of Burger King’s followers on Twitter that the company had been sold to rivals McDonalds. More tweets were posted soon after, and died out about an hour later.
In response, McDonalds’ posted via its official Twitter account that the company “emphatized with our @BurgerKing counterparts”, and they “had nothing to do with the hacking”. As a precautionary step, Burger King has cut ties with some of its suppliers, and plans to issue an apology via its Facebook page. However, the hack managed to boost Burger King’s Twitter followers to over 100000 people, 30000 more than it had before the hacking. Of course, it pales in comparison to McDonalds’ 960000-strong army of followers.
A quick check on Burger King’s Twitter account shows that it has managed to regain access about five hours ago via a new tweet, and the deletion of all tweets posted during the hacking. However, its US Facebook page has made no mention of the hacking on Twitter.
