Lynas Corp website gets defaced amidst strong public protest

This article was originally written by Chan Wern Shen on the old Lowyat.NET website.

As the anti-Lynas saga continues, it looks like a hacker by the name of 4z1 managed to take down the Australian miner’s website yesterday. A quick load of www.lynascorp.com today shows a default error message that attributes the website’s outage to “technical difficulties”, but the screenshot above proves otherwise.

There has been little to no official word on the web from Lynas in response to this outage, but Business Today believes that the attack does not affect any of Lynas’ internal systems as the website was hosted by an “external provider”.

The attack is a follow up to yesterday’s anti-Lynas rally in Kuantan that managed to attract up to 5000 participants.

From Business Today:
A hacker, using the name “4z1” and claiming to be a Malaysian citizen, has taken credit for bringing the site down in a statement on a personal blog.

In a rough translation of 4z1’s statement from Chinese into English, internal Malaysian race issues and fear of radiation from the plant was the explanation for the hacking.
