While the big names of the components and consumer technology game are showing off what they are working on in Taipei, Microsoft have announced their latest product or the Xbox 360, the Xbox Smart Glass. Basically what it is, is an app for iOS, Android and Windows phones that allows you to make use of your device in tandem with the Xbox 360 to further enhance your gameplay. Examples are if you are playing Skyrim, you may be able to use your device to display the minimap instead of having to open it up separately in game. Of course, this will be up to the developers of the titles on what they want to code into the game for that purpose. The possibilities are endless for the project Smart Glass. It doesn’t just end at games, with Smart Glass you will be able to use your device like a keyboard and mouse.
Personally I love that this is being developed as it will really give the end user more out of their console and games with a device that most people already have, the smartphone. The Nintendo Wii U will already have a tablet controller and will be our sooner than this but all things considered, it’s a race to see who executed this concept better.
I hope that when it gets released, older titles will be patched to take advantage of this functionality. But only time will tell and for now, it’s just a demo.
