P1 starts offering Wimax service in Klang Valley

Packet One Networks (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. (P1) today officially opened its doors for Malaysians to subscribe to its WiMAX services, branded as P1 W1MAX. Yang Berhormat Dato’ Shaziman Abu Mansor, Minister of Energy, Water and Communications was there to officiate the historic accomplishment at the grand launch of P1 W1MAX services. P1’s CEO Michael Lai said, “We are indeed proud of the fact that we have put Malaysia on the world map of WiMAX.

Today, not only is P1 the first WiMAX operator in Malaysia to open for subscriptions, but we are also one of the first in the world to offer WiMAX service commercially. We believe that WiMAX will change the Malaysian broadband landscape and the way we live, learn, work and play, and lay the foundation towards achieving Malaysia’s National Broadband Plan and MyICMS 886 objectives because of the very strong proposition of the WiMAX eco‐system known as the DNA‐Device, Network and Applications are, all in place.”

Lai also thanked the Malaysian government for having the foresight on the potential of WiMAX as a catalyst for the nation’s development, and being one of the first countries in the world to issue the WiMAX license as early as March 2007. P1 today introduced two promotional packages to meet consumer and business needs. The promotion runs from 20 August to 30 September 2008. They are:

P1 W1MAX broadband is now available immediately in the following areas: KLCC, Golden Triangle, Pekeliling, Setapak, Gombak, Seri Rampai, Sentul, Pudu, selected areas in Subang Jaya, USJ 1, USJ 7 and Subang Hi‐Tech area. P1’s deployment is supported by Intel, which recently invested RM50 million (approx. US$15m) in P1’s parent company, Green Packet Berhad.

In addition, by the end of 2008, P1 targets to extend its WiMAX broadband coverage to Petaling Jaya, Damansara, Klang and Port Klang and others within the Klang Valley; Johor Bahru; Kedah; Perak; Negeri Sembilan; Melaka and all major towns and cities in the West Coast of Peninsula Malaysia.

P1 made another historical milestone today having received the honorable status in the Malaysia Book of Records on two counts,

1 The First WiMAX Telco
2 The First 10 WiMAX subscribers

Ryaz Patel, Country Manager, Sales and Marketing, Intel Malaysia who attended P1’s grand launch today said, “This is a significant milestone in the growth of WiMAX globally. “IDC Malaysia indicated that notebook sales in Malaysia had continued to outpace desktops during 2008, with more than 1.3 million1 units sold – representing nearly 60 percent of the total available market in Malaysia. Intel believes the increasing availability of high‐speed wireless broadband, such as P1’s 802.16e WiMAX network, will accelerate this trend towards adoption of mobile computing in Malaysia and beyond.”

“The value proposition of 802.16e WiMAX is the Internet as it was meant to be: open, fast and mobile,” Patel continued. “2008 is a milestone year for WiMAX, with more than 300 trials and commercial deployments underway worldwide. Intel will continue to support the growth of the WiMAX ecosystem in Asia,” said Patel.

I have Maxis wireless broadband; also shares in Greenpacket.

Why this fixation on ftth when fibre to the junction box is sufficient in the medium term? Why not wake up to a few real issues such as why given IPV6 we don't all get fixed IP's? Why is it that every few months Telekom Malaysia dreams up a new way of making a bigger nuisance of itself?

As for P1 - they have maybe the best 3G wireless technology and although it can never compete head on with fibre and copper for fixed station, wireless beats and also complements wire when wireless is used for broadcast.

Would like to know what type of router/modem is P1 offering with thier promos (waiver of $999)for yearly signup. No where on thier website do they describe the make/model.
On another note, I live in JB and streamyx has really really sicker big time for the past couple of years and now that Wimax is in town, streamyx has been constant and stable for the past 5 days(for now). Just keeping my fingers crossed. Is it due to competition from P1 now. Is this what it had to take for Streamyx to buck up. What a sorry state of affairs we live in and hv to take for granted.
Also on anotehr note, I am sure most households with broadband also subscribe to Astro. Is there no whre that Astro can get into the picture in providing broadband. Is it feasible??. Just curious. In s'pore they have are offering 100mbps for less then SGD$100 (RM$235)per month. Boy-are we overpriced in M'sia and horrible service to boot.

The price maybe somewhat quite similar, but its 1.2MB and no phone line is needed. Also, think about the mobility feature. And Malaysia is the first to launch WiMax..thats something very unique. More crucially important, WiMax will provide a healthy competition with streamyx. It is a great loss to consumer if we allow only Streamyx to dominate. Look at ASTRO as the sole supplier of SatTv. In US/UK there are tons of broadband / satellite TV supplier, so the consumer is not being ripped off.

Well, only very recently comcast (USA) announced that they will limit usage to 250GIG/month.. thats hell of a lot (>10x cf to P1). However, Im not sure how the charge rate is. MCMC should take note of this, 20Gig / month is way too low. When you watch a lot of youtube or download music, 20Gig is tiny!

As at to date I still have no faith in Malaysia ISPs. No matter how many and what kind of package or service offered by them(ISP) the end result will still disappoint the user. I think most of the user will don't mind to pay more in the subscription fee as long as the service and the connection speed are good. Though I am the TM Streamyx subscriber which I chosen their service out of no choice but I think I will stop it when the contract expires as I cant stand on their lousy and unstable service any morethumbsdownthumbsdownthumbsdown

If i'm not mistaken, the transceiver tower of wimax still have the Achilles heel of only able to serve certain number of people before the performance start to drop. Just like wifi but could cater for more people and more speed. The primary advantage would be the user is able to move while surfing with good speed.

For me i will wait until a lot of ppl start using it and hear if there's any performance drop when lots of ppl already subscribed. If not i might join the bandwagon laughing-smiley

If anyone hasn't noted, the word these corporate people use is called "competitive pricing" which translates to "same price lah, ok!"

No one has actually broken this hidden agenda for the longest time.

Need not look at Brunei, just look at Singapore. For SGD10.35 you get 3Mbps on a freakin WiFi.
No need to discuss land lines because they are offering an average of 6Mbps to 10Mbps for SGD100.

Talk about 2Mbps for freakin RM229?

We have to lobby MCMC to kick ass!

I am in bandar baru sentul, and the P1 guy came to my place (23rd floor), and got 2 bars for the signal strength. I tested the P1 modem today 23 Aug, and you tube was loading significantly faster for the same video (like 10x faster). I also downloaded a movie clip for another different website, and streamyx gave me about 5kbps (I am on streamyx 1MB package)..hell slow. When i Used P1, it was like 132kbps and never went down below 120kbps. When I went to P1 website to test the speed, it gave about 1.4MB speed and download about 600kbps. When I used streamyx and used P1 website to test speed, it gave about 1.2MBPs and upload abt 350kbps. However, although the number compares quite well, Streamyx is way slower when browsing various websites and downloading movies. I think streamyx is clogged up. Maybe there are just too many users and the nuts and bolts have gone too tight or what. P1 is relatively new. I wonder if P1 will also face same thing when the number of users have increased later? Then again bear in mind P1 is wireless, maybe there are less nuts and bolts and the connection is easily "upgraded" when required.

Haven't tried P1 services yet, but looking at the packages -- I think their just following the templates that has been in the market (i.e. Streamyx, iZZi, uMobile). Good thing they open up the package to 2.4 Mbps right from the start.

However, at RM200 ++ for it -- it's a bit of a let down for me. Still expensive for the average joe lah . Not to mention, the current deployment is more of a "fixed wireless" solution. Let's see when they will roll-out the mobile solution (i.e. usb-type) happy-smiley

Nothing new about the 12 @ 24 month contract term -- that's the only way for them to cover the "box modem" (i.e. CPE) cost. WiMax equipments / components are still expensive in the market. Not to mention P1 is the 1st to commercially roll-out WiMax.

About other countries having better services or prices than Malaysia, i.e. Taiwan, Brunei or Singapore -- come on lah, no need to compare with them. Those countries are small in geographical terms -- easy to plan the broadband deployment. For us here in Malaysia, Streamyx is the only reliable option for most of us (don't talk about Klang Valley -- people there have more choice to choose from).

If we touch on Wireless or Wired connection -- you really can't pick one. The future I see, I would like to have both -- wireless & wired working together for the consumer. Forget about Streamyx from TM -- what I am waiting from them is their FTTH (fiber-to-the-home) happy-smiley Wireless!? A big question mark lah. I've tried iZZi & Maxis 3G .. ok lah for normal surfing & e-mail, but when it comes to the content that I like -- Streamyx is my only choice.. for now.

I did get a chance to test another wireless technology -- it was fantastic but since it won't be available in Malaysia anytime soon, so I'll just keep it a secret for now.

Ultimately, I do hope the broadband market landscape will develop more with new products & technologies. But in the meantime, I'll just have to stick with Streamyx, or maybe P1 W1MAX bigsmile-smiley

Have you heard of “Home, Hop & Away” package?

“Home, Hop & Away” package is a combination of Streamyx 1.0Mbps (free ADSL modem) + Celcom Broadband Basic (up to 384kbps). Current promotion price is RM108 per month, which RM48 cheaper than subscribing the 2 services separately.

Package sign up can be done at any Celcom branch or TMPoint in Malaysia. The package is open for existing Streamyx/Celcom subscribers too.

I don't think Streamyx is only RM88 for 1Mbps, note that you have to pay for phone line which add up to RM120+ per month for a 1 Mbps.

P1 W1MAX doesn't require a phone line and it's RM99.

So it's still cheaper.

There are difference package to suit different people requirement. Most people in Malaysia doesn't subscribe to internet because they think they are not heavy user and why pay so much for that, with package of lower usage, more people will subscribe to the internet, that's the government plan all along. Increase penetration rate.

Know what you need but not be "kiasu" ...

Majority of people don't use more than 1 Mbps ...

Dear readers,

I cant say much but this is some story that I must share with you.

I used p1max for almost a month right now. (dont ask me where i got it)

My comment on browsing:
1.youtube is damn fast
2.speedtest i can get (for the 1.2mbps package) 1.4Mbps speed - average
3.most website and server rom any country is fast
4.rapidshare is fast - average 70-90kb/s

torrent:
Achtung! since all su*ckers use Streamyx for torrent (dont forget that they capped the speed) I used to get about 20-50kb/s.
With p1max i can get max speed 100kb/s. averag speed would be around 50-80kb/s
(depend on seeders)

So I am happy

laughing-smiley

But if you guys start to use p1max, then probably my torrent would be slower after sometime eh.

Thats all folks!
