Nike LunarGlide+ launches; journos spotted running wild

If you were stuck in the jam around the vicinity of The Curve last Friday evening, then you might have spotted a bunch of people jogging in the rain. No, they weren’t running a marathon, nor were they involved in some sort of secret training exercise even though national athlete Yuan Yu Fang and ex-national Tri-athlete Kimberly Yap were leading the pack.

Hit the jump to find out more.

The truth is, we (yes, I was jogging along too) were actually test running - and I use the word running very liberally here - the spankin’ new Nike LunarGlide+.

Launched earlier that afternoon in the comfort of Nike Malaysia’s headquarters, members of the media, Nike endorsed celebrities, and several professional athletes were invited to try out Nike’s latest lightweight running shoes, the Nike LunarGlide+.

Ultra light weight and packed to the brim with technology, there’s little wonder why Nike decided to swing around old clichés and use the tag line - Actually, it is rocket science - for it’s marketing campaign. In fact, we were so over our heads with the technical specifications of the LunarGlide+, that Nike Malaysia’s running products specialist Wong Li-Zren had to take stage to walk us through them.

Available in black and white colorways, the first thing you’ll notice about the LunarGlide+ is that the colors are actually gender specific. This is because research has uncovered that women on average pronate more than men, have a very different heel trend due to the use of high heels, and have broader forefeet than men.

Because of these specific traits, the women’s version of the LunarGlide+ comes specific structural changes that will effectively address these physical differences.

The next thing you’ll notice is the absence of Nike’s signature Air technology, and in its place you’ll find a brand new innovative mid-sole design architecture called Dynamic Support. Bridging the gap between stability and cushioning, Dynamic Support utilizes a lightweight foam core called LunarLite that‘s cut to fit firmly into the shoe’s carriage.

Pair that up with Nike’s Flywire technology - a breakthrough that was unveiled by Nike just before the 2008 Beijing Olympics - and you’ve got yourself an ultra stable, ultra lightweight, ultra comfortable running shoe.

Runners traditionally had to choose between stability and cushioning shoes based on their style and varying foot strikes. Now, consumers can choose a single running shoe that addresses specific needs and even adjusting itself on the fly during a run.” -- Menaha Nadaraja, Marketing Manager, Nike Malaysia

But just how lightweight are we talking about? Try 10.6 oz (300 grams) for the men’s version and 8.6 oz (244 grams) for the women’s. That means the LunarGlide+ is about the weight of a rib eye steak, slightly heavier than a pair of iPods, and lighter than a small bottle of mineral water.

And speaking of iPods, since the LunarGlide+ is part of the Nike+ family, it’ll work perfectly fine with your Nike + iPod sports kit.

To top that off, the LunarGlide+ comes with a seamless interior that’s made of strong micro fiber synthetic overlays that have been ultrasonically welded into place. This creates a high-resilience foam sockliner that is uber comfortable, and will encourage a smooth and efficient stride.
Running is a growing sport among Malaysians judging from the overwhelming response in the number of marathons organized here. We are committed to engaging in a broader conversation with the running community - over the next few months we will be going to ground with tailored running programs to connect with these new emerging runners.” -- Menaha Nadaraja, Marketing Manager, Nike Malaysia

The Nike LunarGlide+ is available at retail outlets throughout Malaysia with a retail price of RM399. More information on the LunarGlide+ can be found on www.nikerunning.com.my. You can also keep up to date with updates from Nike Malaysia via Twitter at @NikeMY.
