Mozilla has taken the first steps into expanding the Firefox OS ecosystem with the introduction of two developer phones. Being one of the newcomers to the mobile OS scene, Mozilla hopes that the announcement and availability of the developer devices will help spur app development on the platform.
Head on after the break to find out about the Keon and Peak developer devices.
The first of the two devices is called Keon, which is the more modestly-specced of the two. Featuring a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S1 processor and 512MB of RAM, it also sports a rather tiny 3.5-inch HVGA screen. Inside, there is 4GB of expandable storage and a 1580mAh battery, together with WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity and the usual range of sensors (ambient light, proximity, GPS). Finally, the Keon is also fitted with a 3MP camera, but has no flash.
Mozilla has also announced the Peak developer device, which features a more powerful dual-core 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor paired with 512MB of RAM. There is also a larger 4.3-inch qHD IPS screen as well as a 2MP front-facing camera in front, while an 8MP rear shooter with flash is located at the back. The storage is also set at 4GB, which is expandable via microSD, and a larger 1800mAh battery is fitted.
Both the Keon and Peak will receive regular OTA updates for the OS, and are naturally carrier-unlocked. Mozilla also has a deal in place with Spanish telco Telefonica to distribute the devices, which are manufactured by Geeksphone. Both devices will be available starting from next month.
