After the release of its M50 mirrorless camera earlier this month, it looks like Canon is putting more effort into the format. Canon is testing its own version of a full frame mirrorless camera.
Canon Rumours received a word that Canon has a full frame mirrorless camera prototype that it is currently testing. One particular prototype that its source saw has a top-down LCD like the Leica SL and Burst mode of around 10fps. The body of the prototype is pretty low key with no brand markings. The website states that there might be multiple prototypes being tested that have different designs and bodies.
This rumour compliments recent report by Nikkei that Canon is willing to give more effort to the increasingly popular mirrorless cameras. Last year, Nikkei states that SLR sales in Japan dropped 10% while sales for mirrorless cameras rose to almost 30%. Sony is enjoying its run as the leader of mirrorless cameras with almost no real competition. Sony has quickly innovated its mirrorless offerings by putting new innovative features that enhance user’s shooting experience.
It’s good to see that Canon is seriously considering the format. It’s still unclear whether users can expect a full frame mirrorless camera by Canon this year. However, Canon Rumours does point out that the second half of the year will be “a lot more interesting” for Canon.
