Brr! Samsung Mocks Non-Waterproof Competition with Galaxy S5 ALS Ice Bucket Challlenge

With a voice as cold as the ice water that was dropping unto itself, the following words were uttered:

I nominate the iPhone 5S, the HTC One M8 and Nokia Lumia 930.

Leveraging on the latest viral phenomenon, the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, where pretty much everyone around the world has dunked bucketloads of ice-cold water unto themselves to raise awareness on amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS or also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease), Samsung’s UK marketing team has produced a video that has split opinions.

Not because of highlighting the spectacularly dull voice of S Voice, the voice assistant app that virtually nobody knows of, but because Samsung UK has touched on a subject matter in a manner that obfuscates the original idea behind the #ALSIceBucketChallenge.

But, perhaps this video should be taken in as light-hearted a manner as it was presented. The fifteen-second video’s tongue-in-cheek jab at the competition is perhaps made more amusing by the cold, emotionless narrator.

Too bad they forgot about the Sony Xperia Z2 (which has an IP67-rated body) or even this video, which shows the HTC One M8 submerged in water for a good hour, and worked fine after:

[UPDATE] It seems like one of the competitors have risen to take the challenge!

So the iPhone 5s is waterproof as well? Wait a minute! Look closer at the video – the home button isn’t visible. And, while the GS5 did show some screen movements from the water, this “iPhone” seems to not be bothered by the water movements on the screen at all. Is it a dummy unit? We’ll let you be the judge, though it seems like the iMore people are personally offended by the accusation that the iPhone 5s is not waterproof.
