Mozilla has recently announced the A-Frame, an open source framework provided by Mozilla’s VR division, MozVR, for website developers to create virtual reality based websites without having the need to use the complex WebGL API. Developers will be able to use A-Frame using the more common, HTML markup, to create VR compatible websites.
Interestingly, since A-Frame runs on HTML custom elements, websites that are created using the framework will be accessible on desktops, smartphones as well as VR devices. According to MozVR, its aim is to give users the tools to easily create fluid and seamless VR-based websites. In addition to that, MozVR has also provided website developers with a comprehensive guide on how to get started with A-Frame.
A-Frames comes with a host of tools to get developers started on making VR-based websites. This includes: building blocks, videos, skies and more. Controls and animations are also included. Interestingly, A-Frame is generous enough to provide new website developers with a few pre-made templates.
According to MozVR Product Design chief, Joshua Carpenter, prior to A-Frame, creating a smooth and responsive virtual reality website takes a high level of skill due to the complex nature of WebGL. With A-Frame, developers can easily and freely create websites that doesn’t require them having an extensive knowledge on WebGL beforehand.
