Electronic Arts (EA) has announced that it is partnering with Stability AI, the company known for the image generation tool Stable Diffusion. Naturally, this collaboration is focused on the creation of AI tools to accelerate game development.
In a statement, EA explained that AI and machine learning have been longstanding cornerstones of innovation at the company. This partnership is intended to serve as the next step, in which the two companies will jointly develop “transformative AI models, tools, and workflows”.

Among the first initiatives include accelerating the creation of Physically Based Rendering (PBR) materials. An example of this includes tools for generating 2D textures that retain exact colour and light accuracy in different contexts. Additionally, the two companies are planning to explore AI systems that can pre-visualize entire 3D environments based on prompts. In short, EA hopes to create content faster.
Of course, like many companies riding the AI train, EA assures that humans still remain a priority. In the statement, the company asserted that the partnership will empower its creatives to “do what they do best”.

That said, this collaboration does follow the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund’s US$55 billion (~RM231 billion) acquisition of the company. The move drew much criticism from various parties, including BioWare. So, it remains to be seen whether EA’s partnership with Stability AI is as beneficial as it claims.
