During the tabling of the 2026 Budget, Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim stated that Malaysia would focus on developing power grid infrastructure throughout ASEAN. The development of this cross-border electricity grid is said to strengthen energy trade within the region.
This initiative will take advantage of Malaysia’s strategic location in the region, positioning itself as a major economic hub. Anwar added that this “will open new markets while strengthening linkages with neighbouring economic hubs”.

That said, Tenaga Nasional Berhad and Petronas will collaborate alongside ASEAN partners to expedite the development of the Vietnam-Malaysia-Singapore grid. This will, in turn, deliver additional energy resources from southern Vietnam to Malaysia and Singapore.
The project was signed halfway through the year during the ASEAN summit. This shows the development of sustainable energy technology is possible throughout the Southeast Asian region. It is also said that this power grid will be capable of supplying sufficient amounts of power for the aforementioned countries.
