Microlino 2.0 Microcar Previewed In Malaysia

The electric vehicle is inspired from bubble cars, which is evident by its design cues.

A new automaker has entered Malaysia’s growing fleet of electric vehicle brands, Microlino, a brand that specialises in electric microcars that are inspired by bubble cars. They are also developed by Zurich-based Micro Mobility Systems, and is assembled in Turin. Its latest model, Microlino 2.0, was previewed locally just recently, marking Malaysia as its first market presence in Asia.

The origins of Microlino date back to 2016 when the concept model was shown at the Geneva Motor Show. The Microlino 1.0 later underwent a complete redesign, giving rise to the improved Microlino 2.0, following a protracted legal dispute. Since its debut, the line-up has expanded to include two distinctive variants: the Lite, and the Spiaggina.

The model previewed in Malaysia appears to be the standard version, which features a front-opening door. This door, which also serves as the front fascia, incorporates LED light strips at the front and rear. The headlights are mounted on the sides alongside the wing mirrors.

Additionally, since it draws inspiration from bubble cars, it comes with only three wheels. Inside, the steering wheel is positioned in the middle of the cabin, which features two digital displays: one for the instrument cluster and another for climate control. In terms of space, it is a two-seater vehicle.

In terms of performance, the Microlino 2.0 is powered by a rear-mounted motor producing 17 PS and 17.9 Nm of torque. The EV has a top speed of 90 km/h and accelerates from 0–100 km/h in five seconds. Powering the motor is a 15 kWh battery pack, offered in either nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) or nickel cobalt aluminium (NCA) chemistry. Although the battery type differs, the WLTP range remains the same at 228 km. Charging is available only via AC at a maximum input of 2.2 kW, with a 0–80% state of charge achieved in 5.5 hours.

As these figures suggest, the Microlino 2.0 is designed primarily for urban settings where space is limited and high speeds are unnecessary, such as busy city centres. Although in some countries vehicles like the Microlino do not require a licence, this is not the case in Malaysia. A competent driving licence (CDL) with at least a Class DA endorsement is required to drive the car in urban areas. However, the vehicle is restricted to city roads and cannot be driven on major interstate highways.

The Microlino 2.0’s distribution in Malaysia is managed by Go Daddy Motorsport Autotrader. According to its managing director, Datuk Mohd Khairul, the compact three-wheeled EV will not be launched in Malaysia until the first quarter of 2026, as the company awaits updates on EV incentives. Consequently, pricing details will only be revealed until closer to the launch.
