After the snubbing Samsung gave to its own S Pen with the launch of its Galaxy Z Fold7, the Korean electronics giant says it will bring back the stylus in the future. To that end, it says that it is currently looking into new technology that will allow it to bring S Pen support to future foldable phones.
According to a report by the Korean outlet ETNews, Kang Min-seok, executive director of Samsung’s MX Business Division, said that the company is currently researching and developing thinner and innovative technologies for the S Pen. At the same time, he practically urged consumers to think of the removal of S Pen support for the Z Fold7 as a “trade-off” to the foldable’s thin and light chassis.
Kang’s statement appears to run parallel to an earlier report that Samsung was working another Korean tech firm, HiDeep, to develop new stylus technology that does not require a separate digitiser and battery to function. If this sounds familiar, that’s probably because it seem similar to the technology Apple uses with its Apple Pencil – the fruit company’s stylus doesn’t use a digitiser, but rather a combination of different technologies to support it on its iPad displays, including pressure sensitivity and tilt detection.
As a reminder, the Z Fold7 cannot and does not support the S Pen because Samsung removed the digitising layer from the inner display. Had it not done so, the foldable would not be as thin as it is right now. So, if Samsung’s stylus does make a comeback, we’ll probably see it with the launch of the next generation Z Fold device, probably.
