Anyone remember Anthem? The always-online third-person looter shooter that was made by BioWare? If you thought the game had died, you’d be wrong, as the developer has recently announced that it is sunsetting the game on 12 January 2026. After that point, the game will be unplayable.
And because Anthem is, as mentioned, always-online, there’s no option to play it alone either once the servers go down. For what it’s worth, those who already own it can continue playing until then, but the title will be removed from store fronts, as well as subscription services like Game Pass or EA Play on 15 August.

Despite launching with a slew of issues, many saw the potential that Anthem had. Many held out hope that BioWare and EA would keep working on and improving the game, but by 2021 all hope was finally lost. Perhaps there were some who could enjoy the game in its current state, but now, even those who held out until the very end would have to eventually bid it farewell.
Anthem will eventually be another example of a game that people have bought, but could not play thanks to the way it was made. While it’s not as severe as The Crew by Ubisoft, which was removed from the libraries of those who bought it, it still highlights a problem with the industry. One that, hopefully, can be changed thanks to the Stop Killing Games movement.
