Lenovo has recently introduced a new digital camera in China. Yes, you read that right. Lenovo.
Known as the Lenovo C55, it is a compact point-and-shoot camera with a 64MP Sony CMOS 1/3-inch image sensor and an ISO range of 100-6400. It can record in 4K, has 18x digital zoom, electronic image stabilization, and a built-in flash. The camera is available in a single white colourway, weighs about 190 grams, and measures 112 x 71.5 x 34.5 mm.

On its back is a 2.8-inch LCD for framing and previewing shots, as it lacks a built-in electronic viewfinder (EVF). On the top, alongside the power and shutter buttons, there’s a mode dial that lets users toggle between different shooting modes such as time-lapse, burst, loop recording, slow motion, special effects or filters, video, and photo. Designed with vloggers in mind, it also includes an O-ring fill light surrounding the sensor and a secondary shutter button on the front for added convenience.
Storage-wise, the C55 has built-in memory options of up to 128GB, while a Micro SD card slot is also available for additional space if necessary. Lenovo says the camera can provide up to 120 minutes of use when taking photos and up to 80 minutes when recording via its onboard 1,300mAh battery.

In China, the Lenovo C55 is priced at CNY499 (~RM293) for the 64GB model and CNY559 (~RM329) for the 128GB version, which is actually quite affordable. However, it appears that there’s no plans for an international release at this time.
Lenovo introducing its own camera is, without a doubt, a move that came out of left field. Whether or not it would succeed in this segment remains to be seen, especially considering that it’s likely going to be a China-only release. Nevertheless, we can’t help but be reminded of the time when Samsung introduced a Galaxy-branded point-and-shoot camera back in 2012, which never saw another release after the introduction of its successor two years later.
