Taiwan-based chipmaker MediaTek is on track to tape out its first 2-nanometre (nm) chip this September. The announcement was made by CEO Rick Tsai during his keynote at Computex 2025 earlier today.
The upcoming chip is expected to deliver a 15% boost in performance and 25% lower power consumption compared to its 3nm predecessor, the Dimensity 9400 series. Tsai confirmed that the new silicon will be manufactured at TSMC’s foundry.
In February this year, MediaTek disclosed that it had adopted Cadence Solutions’ 2nm design platform, which leverages AI-driven tools to tackle the growing complexity of advanced-node SoC development. Company vice president San Wu noted that Cadence’s robust automation capabilities have improved throughput and efficiency, enabling MediaTek’s design teams to achieve a 30% increase in productivity.
Beyond the details shared during Tsai’s keynote, further information about MediaTek’s 2nm chip remains under wraps. It is likely, however, that the next-generation flagship will offer enhanced AI acceleration and machine learning performance through improved NPUs, alongside upgraded connectivity and other refinements.
While it’s still early, familiar names such as OPPO and vivo are expected to be among the first to adopt the 2nm chip in their future devices. Whether MediaTek’s new silicon can go head-to-head with Qualcomm’s next-generation mobile chipset remains to be seen.
