Fans of the esports scene will no doubt be aware of the Commonwealth Esports Championships over the weekend. It was the first of its kind, and Malaysian esports athletes made it extra memorable by clinching three gold medals from their respective events.

Of the three, one of the gold medals was claimed by Nor Haikal Noh who represented the Malaysian Super League champions Johor Darul Ta’zim in the eFootball open event. As Stadium Astro reports, he defeated his Scottish opponent 2-0.

One 🥇 medal… but a HUGE team effort ❤️

The second gold medal was claimed by local all-female Dota 2 team Grills Gaming. The team’s starting lineup consists of Stephanie “Auroraa” Lim, Nadrah “Nada” Saufi, Wong “HG” Wei Sian, Bette “iStarx” Chia and Tan “Shizuma” Lyn Xhin.

As shared by the team’s manager on Twitter, Grills Gaming has what is basically a perfect record throughout their time representing Malaysia at the Commonwealth Esports Championships. Not only did they defeat their English opponents 2-0 in a best-of-three set, they also suffered no losses in the four group stage games, as well as the semifinal match against Singapore. Which is very impressive, to say the least.

The third gold medal was also won by a Malaysian Dota 2 team, this time for the open category. This team is being represented by William “MangO” Yeoh, Denise “Wonder’boy” DanialAbdullah, Chung “Ws`” Wei Shen, Ahmad “Ahyad” Ayhad Husam, Pang “ponyo” Sze Xuan, and Yong “LOyd” Bing Jie. Facing England in the finals again, Malaysia took the win, and the gold medal, with a 2:1 score.

The inaugural Commonwealth Esports Championships is being held concurrently with the 2022 Commonwealth Games. But despite this, it is not officially a part of it. There are also only three esports titles as part of the Championships – Konami’s eFootball, Valve’s Dota 2, and Rocket League by Psyonix.
