Samsung has revealed details about its next mobile processor, the Exynos 8 Octa 8890. Set to replace the existing Exynos 7 in use in the South Korean company’s flagship devices, the Exynos 8 Octa introduces some features new to the Exynos line.

Like the rest of Samsung’s octa-core processors, the Exynos 8 Octa 8890 combines four low power cores with four high powered ones. The low power cores in this case are still ARM’s Cortex-A53 cores, while the high powered cores are Samsung’s own design based on the 64-bit ARMv8 architecture. This marks the first time that Samsung is building its own processor cores into mobile processors.

Another improvement with the Exynos 8 Octa is the inclusion of an integrated LTE modem. This mainly saves space on the circuit board, and allows Samsung to include the modem without having to install a separate chip. It could potentially mean even smaller phones, but that is not likely to matter much considering how slim the designs already are.

The GPU front has the least amount of changes, as Samsung is still using the Mali design from ARM. It is bumped up to the newere Mali T-880 from the T-760 found in the Exynos 7.

Samsung is planning to begin mass production of the Exynos 8 Octa 8890 in late 2015.
