This is (Technically) Xiaomi’s Next Product

While we wait for the launch of the Xiaomi Mi 4c, few will be aware that a new product will hit its online store in China tomorrow, and for just 299 Yuan (about RM200).

Xiaomi’s latest product is not a new smartphone, a tablet, nor even a laptop. Technically, this isn’t even a Xiaomi product, but rather a product from one of Xiaomi’s “ecosystem partners” (like the Xiaoyi Action Camera). This is the Runmi 90分旅行箱 – yup, it’s a suitcase…and no, it isn’t a smart suitcase.

Runmi is an independently-run company producing luggage, backpacks and apparel. As one of Xiaomi’s “ecosystem partners”, Runmi receives R&D funding and the option to sell its products on Xiaomi’s enormous online store in China. Its latest product, which literally translates to “90-point luggage”, is a cabin-sized hard shell trolley spinner that looks as utilitarian as it gets. But in classic Xiaomi style, there’s a lot more to it than meets the eye.

The body is made from a high-end polycarbonate made by Bayer used in premium-priced luggage. Called Makrolon, this polycarbonate is exceptionally moldable with strong rebound performance, while its robustness and light weight keeps the luggage light and durable. Companies that use Makrolon in their hard shell luggage include Lojel, Samsonite and even Briggs and Riley.

The 90分 also features an aluminium alloy telescopic handle, with 3 height stops for users of all heights. Other notable aspects of the spinner include four 360-degree spinning wheels, integrated TSA lock, and a total luggage capacity of 36 litres. It is also surprisingly light for a hard-case: just 2.9kg, which is comparable to even the lightest soft-shell spinners of the same size.

As mentioned earlier, the Runmi 90分旅行箱 is set to be available in four colours at Xiaomi’s China online store for 299 Yuan, starting from tomorrow. In case you’re wondering, no, there are no plans to make this available internationally.
