Microsoft has managed to pierce sligthly into Symbian's hold on Nokia with this latest news. Don't worry Symbian fans, Nokia isn't going full Windows... yet. However, both Microsoft and Nokia have announced that they will provide mobile consumers with a new suite of Windows Live services, specifically designed for Nokia devices.

As of today, Nokia users in Thailand, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and Malaysia with selected Nokia S60 devices can download the new suite enabling access to Windows Live Messenger, Windows Live Hotmail and Windows Live Spaces. By the end of the year, Nokia users in India, Philippines, Indonesia and Vietnam can access the service on select devices.

Nokia Nseries consumers who own the Nokia N73, N76, N80 Internet Edition, N93i, and the N95 multimedia computers are the first who can access the Windows Live services via the Download! Application on their devices. Existing users and interested consumers can visit http://www.nokia.com/windowslive to learn more.. Initially the service will be available as a free trial and then customers in select markets wishing to continue using the service may be asked to pay a monthly fee.

While many Asian consumers will choose to extend the power of their desktop to their mobile device, for some, the mobile device may well be their first entry point to the Internet. According to Pyramid Research, the number of mobile Internet users is growing 50% annually, twice the speed of Internet users on the PC. It is also expected that the number of mobile Internet users to number some 800 million people by 2011, which will represent 63% of all people connecting to the Internet in Asia.

Some key enhanced consumer experiences through Windows Live services include: 

• The Windows Live contact list is synchronized with the Nokia address book, enabling Windows Live contacts and their online presence and status right at the customer’s finger tips. This addresses a major pain point for consumers who have traditionally had to manage multiple contact lists.

• Windows Live Messenger has been enhanced to enable quick audio messages with voice clips, the ability to capture that moment with the digital camera and share it via IM, and the ability to change display pictures easily to match a location or mood.

• Windows Live Hotmail now plugs directly into the Nokia email client and enables quick and easy offline access to email. Composing an email not only leverages’ the Windows Live Contacts but also takes advantage of the device features by allowing customers to attach a photo, video or voice recording.

• Windows Live Spaces is seamlessly integrated into the Nokia Gallery, making it easy to select the photo you want, open the online service via ‘Options’, add a title and some text, then upload it to your blog.

Comment: I tried this a few weeks ago on a Nokia E60. From what I see, the Live contact list goes into a separate tab in the address book. Mail goes into a separate mailbox too (as expected). The S60 Live messenger is the only product I've tried. What a faithful port.. it shares the problems that the desktop version has! For example, no contact list renaming, no color highlighting in conversations. Well but if you like using the desktop messenger, I think you will fit right at home with this. As for me, I'll stick to Agile + Pidgin..

Name: karhoe	Comment: Oh damn, not again, Syncing MSN contacts with contact book will screw up everything, just like what had happened to many WLM users on Windows Mobile, we either lost all our contacts or get duplicated contacts
