No, we weren’t bumming in Bandar Utama, skiving in Sungai Wang, or chaffing away on a keyboard in a Subang Jaya cyber café. Ok, maybe the last statement isn’t entirely accurate, but before you pull out the straw effigies and start rioting outside our office (yes, we DO have a physical office somewhere in town), we swear that it was all work related.

The full story about our adventure in the Intel Asia PC Gaming Showdown after the jump!

About a week ago, Intel Malaysia’s PR liaison contacted Lowyat.NET and invited us to participate in their latest e-gaming initiative called the Intel Asia PC Gaming Showdown. Consisting of three games - Fifa 2008, Need For Speed: Pro Street, and Crysis - the winner of this showdown would be determined by the combined scores of all three games.

The winner of this showdown would then go on to represent Malaysia with his score, which would be compared against the winners from six other countries in the region (India, Korea, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam). The top three scorers from the region (but only one from each country) would go on to take part in the Grand Finals that will be held in Hong Kong this October, to battle it out for the prestigious title of “The Ultimate Asian Gamer”!

Unlike regular gaming competitions where participants are streamlined into various categories that correspond to their gaming prowess (i.e. Pro, Amateur, Media), the folk at Intel decided to jumble everyone together. This meant that amateur gamers and members of the media would face off with each other during the course of the event. While certain media gamers weren’t particularly excited about this set up, the rest of us, as well as the amateur gamers, felt that it was a welcome change to the norm.

On Monday, nine gamers (five from the media, four invited amateur gamers) converged at the FTZ Asia Net Cyber Café in Subang Jaya. The media contingent was made up of representatives from Game Axis, PC Gamer, PC.Com, Chip and Lowyat.NET, while the ranks of the invited gamers boasted some of Malaysia's best Fifa, Need For Speed and Counter Strike players.

Divided into three groups of three, gaming commenced with Fifa 2008. Yours truly was lucky enough to be drafted with two other media participants, while the other two media players had to duke it out with the invited gamers. Needless to say, some of the scores weren’t pretty.

To cut a long story short, the media contingent faced a hard day out, and before the showdown came to a close, a couple of media contestants decided to bail. Those of us who stayed on, fought on valiantly, but by the end of the day only one man was going to walk away as the winner - Rinie Ramli, the man responsible for the above score line.

Whether or not he will eventually make it to Hong Kong is anyone’s guess. Scores from the region still have to be tabulated, but until they are announced, rest assured that we’re all rooting for him.

On a side note, I managed to top the media contingent and emerged with the highest scores among the media gamers. Unfortunately,  in the real world that title is worth as much as nothing, but hey, I’m happy since it was my first time playing all three of the above games.

More information on this regional event can be found at the Intel website: http://www.intel.com/apac/consumer/game/playoff/.
