Cisco lays claim to the iPhone trade mark, and is perhaps rightfully suing Apple for unauthorised use of the mark. However, a quick check at the United States Patent and Trademark Office reveals 4 'living' iPhone trade marks, including one of 'Xtreme iPhone'.
Cisco only owns one of these trademarks (it inherited this trademark after acquiring Infosys which was the company which originally filed for the iPhone trademark) , the only uncontested one. We can simply assume that the iPhone name will now be extremely popular after Apple's official announcement. What happens next, remains to be seen.
While Cisco's trademark is registered and safe, a trademark filed by 'Ocean Telecom Services' on 26 September 2006 sounds suspiciously like what Apple's iPhone actually does. Take a look at its description here.
We don't know what will happen from here, but we are certain its worth watching!
