Opera
yesterday unveiled Opera Unite - a new technology that they claimed will
"reinvents the Web". Opera Unite allowed users to turn their
computers into a server which would enabled them to share data and media with
others directly. All Unite's functions can be controlled directly from an Opera
web browser, eliminating the need for an intermediate servers or
services.
“Technology
moves in distinct cycles. PCs decentralized computing away from large
mainframes. Opera Unite now decentralizes and democratizes the cloud. With
server capability in the browser, Web developers can create Web applications
with profound ease. Consumers have the flexibility to choose private and
efficient ways of sharing information. We believe Opera Unite is one of our
most significant innovations yet, because it changes forever the fundamental
fabric of the Web.” - Jon von Tetzchner, CEO, Opera.
There
are currently six services available on Opera Unite:
* File
Sharing
* Fridge:
share notes privately and securely which are pasted on a virtual fridge.
* Media
Player: play music on your computer from anywhere.
* Photo
Sharing: share pictures directly with friends.
* The
Lounge: direct link chat room hosted on your computer.
* Web
Server: run website from your own computer.
We
are quite impressed on how easy it is to setup each services in Opera Unite
during our test run. Even though Opera Unite is only in its alpha status, it
surprisingly works pretty well. The controls are very straight forward and
simple. But, before you able to use all these services, you need to login or
register an Opera account first.
The
alpha builds of Opera Unite - integrated into a special edition of Opera 10.0
Beta, is now available for download at Opera Labs(http://tinyurl.com/mpmf6o).
