MYNIC held the grand public launch for its Second Level .my Domain Name. The event was officiated by Yang Berhormat Datuk Dr. Maximus Ongkili, Minister of Science Technology & Innovation who registered his very own domain name, mpkotamarudu.my. The launch was also attended by Mr. Amarjit Singh, Senior Director representing Malaysia Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) who registered a domain name on behalf of MCMC Chairman, Datuk Dr. Halim Shafie as halimshafie.my witnessed by MOSTI Minister.

Puan Shariya, Director of MYNIC in her speech mentioned MYNIC’s efforts throughout the year to increase active online participation from all layers of society. “Our efforts for the entire year of 2007 were based on the immediate needs of the public, the fast broadband growth and an increasing ICT savvy community,” she said.

MYNIC’s main objectives are to bring online identity to the grassroots to allow even rural folks to enjoy the flexibility of technology and to bring Malaysia’s unique identity to the world. The elimination of categorization in the shorter domain name option allows businesses and individuals to cut across industries and still be relevant online.

According to Datuk Dr. Maximus, “MOSTI’s objectives are mainly to encourage science and technology knowledge among the general public, to effectively utilize technology to build sources of income and guarantee public comforts through the development of technology.” As an effort to achieve these objectives, the ministry has set up five core clusters for biotechnology, ICT, Industrial Technology, Science and Technology and Sea to Space which would focus and strive for positive development for the benefit of our society.

The government as well as individual entrepreneurs are heading towards branding Malaysia and its products and services with much zest. Malaysia is risingly being positioned as an active outsource technology innovator in the region joining the likes of countries like Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore.

The Malaysian community is increasingly using the Internet for economic, finance, politics, communication and social networking. "Malaysian content found on the Internet is a clear indication of the deep interest especially among the younger generation who use the medium to exchange opinions on varied topics," said Shariya.

"Looking at the high growth of the internet usage, it would be highly beneficial for every individuals, organizations and governments to expose their businesses, society and products via the Net," said Mr. Amarjit Singh, Senior Director of MCMC who was speaking on behalf of MCMC Chairman, Datuk Dr. Halim Shafie.

This clearly displays the nation's affinity towards this new medium which serves as a multipurpose venue for business or pleasure. The current generation is going to progress into Malaysia's future business and political future thus carrying this trend to a higher level.

Local government agencies are already shifting actively into the ICT sphere by launching online filing, forms and payments to make life easier for government procedures. This same initiative must be adopted by the rest of the nation to ensure that the growth level of this technology boom is well balanced and every layer of the society is given equal opportunity to reap the benefits of automation.

The registration is opened up to all Malaysian citizens and businesses legally registered within Malaysia. The shorter .my identity will serve as an alternative choice for individuals, organizations and businesses. The third level domain names will continue to be available for registration. All applications for second level domain names will be processed by MYNIC's appointed resellers and are subject to MYNIC's terms and conditions.
