Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007 now more affordable

In line with PIKOM's drive to bridge the digital divide and to make ICT more affordable to the masses, Microsoft Malaysia as part of their Unlimited Potential initiative has slashed the price of 2 variants of its popular Office 2007 production suite.

Beginning July 1st, the Microsoft Office Home and Student Edition will be permanently marked down to a suggested retail price of RM279 from its current price of RM499. Furthermore Microsoft is having a special promotion in conjunction with PC Fair II just for the months of August and September whereby an extra 20% discount will be offered which brings down the retail price to only RM199.

Also if you are heading to PC Fair at KL this weekend, make sure you are one of the early birds as Microsoft will be selling the first 100 copies at only RM99. This promotion is valid for the first day of PC Fair II only.

During the same months, the Microsoft Office Small Business 2007 will also be offered with a 20% discount. The promotion for Microsoft Office Small Business Edition 2007 is valid for OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) licenses only. OEM licenses can only be purchased by a customer if he buys this together with a new PC. Actual retail pricing will be determined by the resellers.

Even greater news for small business owners, Microsoft Office Small Business 2007 and Microsoft Office Professional 2007 will be running a special promotion from August to September 2008, which entitles customers to a free limited Office edition Touch ‘N Go card with RM20 value. This applies to OEM licenses only, and is valid while supplies last.

The Microsoft Office Home and Student Full Packaged Product (FPP) features Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote while the Small Business edition has the addition of Outlook and Publisher. An interesting point to note is that the Home and Student FPP actually allows you to install up to 3 PCs using a single license provided there are all in the same household.

Wah didn't know such an error could caused such a huge issue.

Anyway i apologize about the misinformation regarding the pricing but that was what I initially understand from attending the Microsoft/PIKON press conference on this.

The Office SBE 2007 price quoted to me by Anabelle Bernice Co, Product Marketing Manager Office System, Microsoft Malaysia herself was USD152 which if your convert comes to around RM500.

I admit I did not mention that its only for the OEM version as I only realize this after a call from Microsoft themselves informing me of the mistake which i edited promptly.

As for the pricing for 1.5k for SBE, I think the vendor or seller that u went to was clearly trying to rip u off and probably not even an authorized reseller.

Oh and for the record, i do not work for Microsoft or PIKOM.

Hi there,

As a regular user of Lowyat.NET, I have rarely come across postings by this site as being 'deceitful' and/or 'misleading', if any. In fact, I rely on this site for information FOR WORK and so far, it has served me well!

While I do not condone editorial errors, I also have to realise and admit to the fact that sometimes, errors do crop up and the onus is on us - the consumers - to verify facts and do some preliminary research before we, and I quote the ED: "... jumping to wild conclusions and accusing..." Unquote.

As for why those guys at the booth quoted such a price, it is for all of us to guess. I do not think Microsoft finalises the retail price of their products - the onus is on their 'resellers' to determine retail prices. In Russell's case, since he's already in KL, maybe he could've checked out other places i.e. Low Yat Plaza instead of just relying on PC FAIR alone? In fact, this site alone would've been more than sufficient to give anyone a fair indication of expected selling prices over a wide range of products/services.

As for trial periods, I understand that from the outset, the developers (Microsoft in Russell's case) would've spelled out in various forms the trial period. In other words, the developer does not owe the user any further notifications - any such notices to appear would be purely based on a gesture of goodwill. If the user does not take into consideration the trial period, read the agreement prior to installation and so on, I seriously doubt the developer should take any blame for not 'notifying' the user, when it has already done so from the beginning.

Keep up the good work Lowyat.NET!

Terence do you work for Microsoft or PIKOM? If so you should be ashamed of your faulty info,
If not where did you get your orignial info which was full of errors.

Original post is at http://72.14.235.104/search?q=cache:hw1nCFpAMkwJ:www.lowyat.net/v2/latest/microsoft-office-home-and-student-2007-now-more-affordable.html+microsoft+Office+Small+Business+2007+price&hl=en&gl=my&strip=1
I notice tonight that you have made severe edits since then, but not even had the decency to note your mistake or note you have revised the post. VERY decetfull!

Anyway THANKS for wasting my time!

Your original post said "During the same months, the Microsoft Office Small Business Edition 2007 will also be offered with a 40% discount which brings it down to around RM500."

I went all the way today to the PC fair from Seremabn to get a copy of Office SBE at this special price (not a cheap trip at todays fuel prices). However when I got to the microsoft stand they first said "sorry no stock of Office SBE 2007" then they explained that anyway the price would be RM1595 (approx) not RM500 as you had claimed. Final they addmited that there was a SMALL discount on OEM Office SBE 2007 for PC's bought at the fair (but noting like RM500) but definately NO special prices on retail packs.

This has left me very annoyed, especially since my office suite disabled all functions on Thursday without warning becasue my trial period had expired. Really can't a Micro$oft atleast put a warnming 1 or 2 weeks prior to expiry to give customers time to organise purchase of a full license!

ED: Dude, you ought to do some research on your end before jumping to wild conclusions and accusing us of providing wrong information. If you did check some of the pricelists on the site, its a known fact that the Office SBE 2007 retails for ~RM700 (pre discount). This is retail pricing from Plaza Low Yat. Even the Professional version retails for ~RM900, so i have no idea why would anyone quote you a RM1.5k price for the SBE edition.

We received the pricing information from Microsoft. We were informed later that due to the discount, all copies of the SBE 2007 were snapped up.

We will be getting more clarification from Microsoft on Monday and we will post an update to the article.

Hi Gouki,

To answer your question, the percentages are rough estimates - hence reduction from RM499 to RM279 represents a cut of APPROXIMATELY 40% - plus or minus a few %.

As for the PC Fair promotion, it is a 60% reduction off the original selling price of RM499, hence RM199-60, to be exact. However I guess the good people at Microsoft rounded it DOWN to RM199.

The special promotion is only available to the FIRST 100 visitors to the Microsoft booth on the FIRST day of PC Fair II only.

I hope the above answers your questions.

Thank you.

Cheers,
Steven

20% of RM279 is RM 223 rite? Why RM199? Please confirm.

PC Fair II is starting from Fri - Sun (1st - 3rd Aug). So to enjoy the RM99 promotion, should I go on Fri or Sat? Coz you mentioned on weekend. Please confirm.

Thanks!
