MCMC announces WIMAX spectrum winners
(26 votes)

ImageAs widely predicted, both  YTL e-Solutions Bhd (YTL-e) and Green Packet Bhd linked firms have each been awarded 2.3GHz broadband wireless access (WIMAX) spectrum today. Two additional spectrum ranges were also awarded to Asiaspace Dotcom Sdn Bhd and Redtone-CNX Broadband Sdn Bhd. Red Tone's spectrum is only valid for Sabah and Sarawak.

The 2.3GHz band has traditionally been used for fixed service and service for point to multipoints. Making this band available to industry or service providers will allow them to provide broadband services to consumers, with much the same capability as the 2.4GHz, 2.5GH and 3.4 GHz.

The roll out of 2.3GHz band is to complement the implementation of MyICMS 886 Strategy whereby it is targeted that broadband penetration reaches 75% of households by 2010. The MCMC hopes that the provision of lines by way of wireless technology, which is faster and more affordable, would assist in meeting the targets of the MyICMS 886 Strategy.

The official list of winners as well as their awarded spectrum band are as above. MIB Comm Sdn. Bhd. is a 55% subsidiary of Green Packet while Bizsurf is a 50%-associate of YTL e-Solutions. REDtone-CNX Broadband is a subsidiary of REDtone.

Hey, has anyone been to this website... www.airzed.com? It seems that WiMAX has been in the market for quite some time and its not limited to the 2.3GHz band. In fact the government is misleading people into thinking that only the four "chosen" ones can operate WiMAX in Malaysia. Wonder why they are doing that?

But still all these WiMAX companies has to purchase lease lines from Telekom for get gateway to international links. So..last miles still belongs to Telekom.. I have heard complains by other telcos are having problems expand their bandwidth just because TM claim not enough of lease from lines available but you are on the waiting list..how true.. blue-smiley . My guess RedTone has a advantage, Brunei Telco may entertain them with lease line to international links..

"Please fulfill what you've promised to the customers" - i think most of the users will have the same thoughts with this words.

anyway, hope this WiMax services can be rolled out soon to the community.then we will know how s*cks "the nuts" services are.

I hope those companies really deliver cos the investment sum is not small. YTL has deep pockets and a committed leader as in Francis Yeoh but I am not so sure about those other 3 players. Redtone is struggling financially and this investment is a real challenge for them.

Do the 4 companies the new independent ISP? Telokom sucks! While waiting for the services to cover your area, try to see whether you area is under 2Mbps fibre optic coverage at KL and Penang. See http://vhanded.blogspot.com/2007/01/streamyx-new-competitor-in-future.html

Hi all,
Have you all read Sun newspaper today? At business news column entitiled 'WiMax tender outcome will benefit industry, consumers'.
The question playing around your mind whether the major players would reduce prices for broadband services to compete with the spectrum holders has been answered at third paragraph.
One of the industry analyst said "but it is not going to be easy for these small companies to roll out WiMax in the amount time given"

And also at second last paragraph...

"As for Telekom Malaysia Bhd, Maxis Communications Bhd and Digi.Com Bhd, he said the three companies could stillbecome WiMax players if MCMC choseto allow utilisation of the 2.5Ghz bandwave for the service"
"Both TM and Maxis already have 2.5Ghz and they also have 3G and High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA). As for DiGi, they may still be able to use the 2.5Ghz band"

Look, there is still a portion for each TM, Maxis and DiGi to have this WiMix spectrum license as the WiMax spectrum also covered 2.5Ghz which these telco's had already belonged. Meaning that, nobody left out as well as TM laughing-smiley

So? just wait and see lorr!! laughing-smiley

YTL e-solutions?? Sigh...I feel for digi..I really do...hope the CEO/President change their corporate affairs people, they need to contribute more for batiks and other 'government friendly' corporate social responsibility activities....the fact that YTL have always been seen doing this type of activities, little suprise that they won...watch out for more contracts in the future! laughing-smiley

I heard in UK, the package is only GBP 15 (RM100) per month for 8Mbps! Taking into consideration the cost of living in UK & Malaysia, this should translate to about RM 40 per month. Hope this is the case. Streamyx 1Mbps at RM 88 per month is daylight robbery!

You should know that there's a reason behind why DiGi wasn't given the 3G license from MCMC. Celcom, as well as Maxis, are local telecommunications providers, whereas DiGi is a local telecommunications provider with more than half of their shares bought by investors from other countries. Their high-ranked officers are not Malaysians, but Europeans.

However, I don't see why MCMC didn't give DiGi the chance to get an WiMAX license too. I guess I'll have to think about it. :

The award of spectrum to RedTone for the Borneo area is well understood, but the DENIAL of DiGi.com for a spectrum in WiMAX is downright disappropriate. Just because Telenor got 60% doesn't means the Gov couldn't achieve the MyICMS 886 initiatives!

It's okay to give it to small time player and we'll see how they'll be bought by BIG HEAD, and even DiGi have to resort to discuss with TTdotCom to bought this company for the 3G License.

Transparency and Free Trade. Not in Malaysia. Especially Gov contracts and spectrums... blue-smiley
