Malaysia to filter the Net?

Updated Version :  via Star Online

KUALA LUMPUR: Local telecommunication companies have been told to set up a filter system to block out online pornography by next year. Science, Technology and Innovations Minister Datuk Seri Dr Jamaluddin Jarjis said the non-profit system should be available nationwide to consumers soon.

He said he was informed that 3G handphones could be used to access online pornography. He added that the newly-formed Malaysian Cyber Security Centre (MCSC) and local telcos have been directed to crack down on online pornography. Dr Jamaluddin said the centre was expected to step up efforts to track down those producing and downloading pornography .

“The MCSC has the capability to track down those producing or downloading pornography.  “It is just that we need to aggressively pursue this. Effective enforcement with the cooperation of parents, cyber cafes and traders is needed,” he said at a press conference at the 57th Umno general assembly.

Dr Jamaluddin said the MCSC would also launch a campaign on using the Internet positively and educate parents and the private sector on how to fight online pornography. “The prime culprits in the downloading of pornography are schoolchildren and undergraduates,” he noted.

LYN: There seems to be two possible outcomes from this directive. By setting up a non-profit system to filter porn, it  would mean that an optional system would be introduced to filter out online porn, and it can be turned on (and off) by the end user. If this indeed is the aim of the system, then it would be welcomed with open arms all around. We'll have to take a wait and see approach and update this story when more details are revealed about this system.

We're wondering how some telcos might use this to their advantage. Before this it was 20% of our users use 90% of our bandwidth for P2P downloads. Next up, 90% of P2P downloads are found to be pornography, so we have to filter and block all P2P traffic to curb online porn. If that happens, remember you heard it here first!

-------

Unconfirmed reports are coming through that the Government has instructed the Malaysian Cyber Security Center and local Telco's to put a stop to online pornography, and a filtering system will be implemented next year.

We are not going to speculate more on this issue until we get confirmation of the story. We'll keep you updated when we know more.

That's all show off!...

They are not doing something against porn, what message I got from this government by this law is;

Don't watch porn; just do it!!!

95% of hotels selling womens; I know this how come government doesn't know. If you go in branch roads at night almost every road you can see womens and shemales selling their bodies. Massage centers & health centers 99% of them doing this. Even at noon time people selling porn dvds on streets.

Actually in Malaysia no need to learn porn on internet, just look around.

As I said this is all show off. If you really against porn; first start cleaning up streets.

Canada Develops Software To Bypass Firewalls

Canadian university researchers have developed software that allows people that live in countries that limit internet access to surf the web without restrictions. The program will be a free download and available Friday.

The Psiphon program, developed by computer experts at the University of Toronto, allows an Internet user in a country with no online curbs to set up an account for someone in a country that censors Web content, and that person can then surf the net without restrictions.

I just hope the system is optional; and if it isn't I hope it's set up properly. 60% of the websites I go to (though non-pornographic in nature) have pr0n banners floating around them - if I lose access to 60% of my websites simply because of 1 stupid banner, I'm moving to Singapore. Lol, in a democratic society; the internet should be kept as a public and unfiltered network. Filtering should be client-sided. If they do start cracking down on people which access pr0n, we're going to see alot of our Msians (including highschool teens) in court - and an outburst of SSL HTTP proxy usage.

Client end blocking laa. Like US. If u don't want your child to see pr0n, get net nanny or something. Not everyone likes being controlled, and they might actually have a reason to access pr0n.

I admit, I don't see pr0n myself, but like many others I scared that government actually end Internet freedom, or even censor things they deem "inappropriate" (i.e. Miss Piggy from Muppets. I remember one time one stupid channel "censor" one particular show and erase all the pigs from the show). I dun want to be told I cannot access a website just because it is about Miss Piggy.

Blocking P2P is bad oso. Some Linux distro only available through BitTorrent.

Yes, I remember PM's promise to not censor the net oso. Contradictive, I agree.

There is a saying "I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend your right to say it"

This is not about porn. This is about someone deciding what I can or cannot see, what I can or cannot do. This is about losing the freedom to do so.

I am opposed to this because it sets a bad precedence. As many have asked, what comes next? Opposition websites? Blogs? All email will be scanned and filtered? Someone tapping your phone at the main exchange?

All opinions contrary to what "big brother" likes will ultimately disappear.

I believe the issue here is not just porn, it's the filtering system, everyone here is concerned about the other things that our so enlightened government will be filtering out next after they've done with porn, besides dare you say you never watched porn before? everything has adverse effects, it's how you put it to use that's important. including porn. besides, we as adults should have the freedom to filter our own content, for ourselves and for our kids, or would it be more fun to be told what to do just like when you were a kid and immature? impose more silly compulsory filters and there goes our freedom, that's the point everyone is pointing out here, we're not promoting porn by any means mind you.

OK, so there goes the promise of not censoring the Net. Not only Mahathir is pissed off at farmer Abdullah, now I am very pissed off at him too.

This is just the begining. Filtering porn is just a good pretext to test out the viability and effectiveness of the filtering systems.

The real target would be free speech on the Internet. Malaysiakini and the likes will be subject to the block because they 'contain pornographic materials' - someone used the word 'sex' in one of the forums there.

This is not good - we know how covert government and politicians work.

next they will start filtering sms for any 'intimate' messages, then phone conversations for 'intimate' conversations, then they open every bloody snail mail sent to filter out 'intimate' letters.filtering porn is all fine and dandy, but not as a compulsory system for mature citizens, but for kids and under aged citizens, the internet is nothing if all we can surf are government websites and educational websites and other websites so deemed 'appropriate' by the so called 'higher intellect' of the country, and I agree with the saying, the more you cage the beast, the more the beast fights back.

Stupid government...i can bet when things are very strict, people tends to do more crime..trust me..seriously, by banning pornography..those highly addicted people might transfer their lust to other people..who would know..as example, students in religious schools like sekolah agama tends to be more aggressive than students in full boarding school..this is because things are much stricter and students do not have thier freedom to ddo anything they want..even in the newspaper we read student hit by senior, and the worst, student killed by senior, in where? sekolah agama sekian sekian...US will then target Malaysia for stopping human freedom, just like Iraq where things are very much strict..you can't do this and do that..It will be the same then maybe US will invade us perhaps? well see blue-smiley

If the Malaysian government does indeed pass this measure it will further show the country's lack of freedom of speech. Pornography is deemed by all as inappropriate but citizens are mature individuals that can choose what appropriate for them and whats not. How can Malaysia aim to be a developed country within 2020 when such laws being passed. The image of Malaysia around the world is a very positive one. I personally come from Bahrain which is a modern state in the Middle East. Malaysia is a good example of what countries in the Middle East are trying to be but with such laws this image will surely be shaken.
