3D printers are mind blowing machines that are capable of generating physical 3D objects that have been laid out in a Computer-Aided Design (CAD) file. It is
called a printer because the way it works is almost similar to a normal paper
printer – laying down the raw material layer by layer, until the object is
formed. And as you can expect with such high tech gadgetry, a machine like this isn't exactly meant for the average Joe and Jane because of their sky high prices.
Enter the MakerBot
Industries CupCake CNC rapid prototyping machine. Using plastic as raw
material, this machine is available in two variations - a RM 2630 (US$ 750) DIY
kit or a readily assembled one for RM 8766 (US$ 2500). It is way
cheaper compared to other 3D printer out there which usually cost from RM 17500
(USD5000) onwards.
According to the MakerBot official website (http://www.makerbot.com/),
this kit and any other kits built by them are open source and was designed to
be mod-friendly to users. Checkout the video demo at Engadget and prepare to be amazed.
