Lowyat.TV: Exclusive Look At Smart Suface
(75 votes)
by Wern Shen

A couple of weeks ago, the Lowyat.TV crew was fortunate enough to be invited into the labs of a local company called Smart Surface Sdn Bhd. The dynamic duo who run this operation have actually created their own version of a smart computing surface similar to the Microsoft Surface, and we were fortunate enough to be the first IT media in Malaysia to actually catch a glimpse of this device.

For more indepth information on the Smart Surface, please visit the official website at http://smart-surface.com/. You can also get in touch with the Smart Surface team directly via phone at +6017 393 4084.

of course, multitouch in malaysia is already common thanks to iphone. what's next is developing really elegant and well thought out applications. these days, almost anyone with a good head can build a decent multitouch table/wall. to get it running smoothly is another thing.

Late last year, with the help of NUIgroup, I managed to build a multitouch screen (40inch) using materials readily available from Jalan Pasar, Pudu. Cost was under 500 (without projector). BTW, I'm not a programmer nor am I an engineer/technician.

And for anyone who's built such a thing would know that ambient light from the sun/lamps will interfere with the screen, and is one hurdle to . However there are workarounds on this, found on the NUI group, which is one great community to learn from.

On another note, I hope this blame game has stopped, and has moved on to better things. Yes, I do believe the rule of the game is to give credit where credit is due. And give back to the community where giving back is due.

So there.
Happy Hari Raya!

TO Mr. Paul Stinchcombe. You want us to beleive that BAT paid over MYR 60.000 (that is sixty thousand MYR) for a multitouch table just to use it ONE TIME at a single small exibition and "never intended to be reused" as you claim!!!!!!!!!! (can I add more exclamation marks here). You don't think we re that stupid do you?

@Paul Stinchcombe: The agency involved in getting the table was called Three Infinity. I saw the table myself and it was not working under any sort of light even when calibrated. The software created by dragonsoft would hang if it had multiple blobs at the same time. If you are up for a challenge, I'll be more than glad to upload your software and ours... moreover, I have pics and vids of the table being used by BAT... it clearly shows OUR software in use.And since the subject of "Smart" is in discussion now, how smart are you that you are claiming that we ran a 1:2 aspect ratio software on a 4:3 table....Oh and btw, our table was also at the mercy of their technicians... and they had absolutely no trouble "calibrating" or using it...So plz get your facts right... oh and next time.. try not to use chewing gum to fix your camera...thumbsdown

Faysal, it seems that lying about where you got your software is becoming a habit. The software used at the BAT event was indeed created by Dragonsoft Research (www.dragonsoft.com.my) which can be verified by BAT and their agency G2, both of which had seen everything running prior to the event at out clients office. The reason that you were "begged" to deploy your table was because the clients technicians were not able to calibrate their own unit. As for your claims that the 8ft x 4ft table was "thrown out" by BAT... This table was successfully deployed in Penang, which has been well documented, and was never intended to be reused.
It seems that Smart Surface is not so smart after all.

We have some really ill-informed commentaries on the product. Some of the commentators would rather see this innovation credited to the US or to Singapore, a sure sign of someone weighted down by an inferiority complex. They have a problem handling the fact that this is a Malaysian product.

Some aspects of the product are bound to be open source. Innovations that do not contain some open source elements are rare indeed. The point is the product performs according to what it claims it is capable of doing and its performance is being improved to meet the needs of the targetted market segments.

I saw the prototype at the ITEX and was impressed with the product and particularly its potential applications. The company should promote the product to policy makers in one of the Ministries to deploy the product throughout the Ministries' core departments.

As a Malaysian product, that's the way to go. After all, which innovation can we cite as not having faced initial glitches and question marks about its potential applications. The product is ready to go to market and after tailoring its application to the customers requirements it will soon become another everyday gadget we take for granted.

Good luck to the young enrepreneurs for their innovation.

@Lowyat Admin: Plz allow this comment as it bears legal stipulations:

@Stealer: We do not need to "defend" ourselves from anyone. If anyone requires defending, it should be you! Our product speaks for itself. Today, British American Tobacco had used our table for their launching. They initially bought one from a company called Dragonsoft who is a veteran NUI member. Their table and software sucked so much that at the last moment their agent literally begged us to rent out our table and develop a software overnight!

So again, our products speak for itself. Its the only one that works under heavy spot-lights. If you can do anything better then by all means come forward and show. Otherwise rest assured that MOSTI is gonna make all attempts to nab you. Your file is already under review at Jenayah Court #5. I managed to move it from a civil suite to a criminal one.

So good luck. I am not threatening you. I am only giving you a warning as it is my legal obligation.

Please give credits to NUI group. They know what you are doing. And remember what you told them, u gonna feedback your "tracking engine" back to them on september, we all waiting.

And stop threatening me. Solve your problem. You haven't defend your case in nui forum, where there is tons of experts awaiting.

@stealer, since you mentioned legal action, let us inform you that we are completely legit and NUI cannot take us to court under any circumstance. On the contrary, we are taking legal action against you in association with MOSTI and Cyber Security Malaysia under article 177 and 182 on charges of attempting to tarnish reputation by furnishing false information without adequate proof.

If we go to court, we can easily show our tracking core as well as the source codes and developers. Furthermore, ALL of the developers in Malaysia are hobbyist, meaning that if u take their surface under the sun or even under filament lamps, they will produce false blobs. Our ones worked fine under intense Ir emitting lamps at the exhibition.

Our engine being buggy is still better than NUI's CCV and tbeta. By 'buggy', we mean that it still hasn't passed quality control as our quality control is in Japan. We are testing it under extreme conditions, unlike tbeta which is a hobbyists work.

As for YOU, lets see if YOU can come anywhere close to us in technology. the only people from NUI with any commercial substance is probably Taha and Harry

Wont argue anymore on the detail or history so.. we gone this far, this is the summary:
1. Check "multitouch malaysia", bunch of result comes out b4 your company.
2. You admit using NUI module for testing, which appear in your interview and PR material in Youtube. But you only admit in the forum after we provide the proof to you.
3. If your core-engine is buggy and only beable to release on september, which engine you using now on your commercial release?
4. We will wait for your good news in September when u release your core engine to NUIGROUP.

B4 then, You're more than welcome to answer the question in NUIGROUP, the group of original developer are waiting.

Secondly, I have seen Harry's Horizon as well as snowflake, which I must say is quite impressive. Third, I have advised quite a few groups on the development of LLP who were lost due to lack of resource at your group.

@Stealer, get your history sorted out...!! Singapore isnt part of Malaysia anymore! We ARE the first to release a surface computer in Malaysia THAT IS COMMERCIALLY VIABLE. If you dont know what that phrase means, it works under bright lights and ambient noise!!

The objects used for the demo are FREE OPEN SOURCE materials that were built upon by SMART SURFACE.

So plz be clear about your claims and I DARE you to reveal your actual identity. And I promise you that I will let you personally review our tracking core (still some bugs left) which is far superior to tbeta or ccv. We are working on the bugs and will release the core to NUI group within september.
