Sarawak's Chief Minister, Abdul Taib Mahmud has recently announced that his state would have 50% broadband penetration rate within 2 years, a massive boost to its current 1.3% broadband penetration rate. Sarawak plans to use wireless last mile technology, starting with Miri and progressing throughout the state and has named Sacofa Sdn Bhd (a state-government agency) and local telecommunications firm, Senawar . Celcom is listed as a 20% shareholder of Sacofa Sdn Bhd. Better yet, the State Government would bankroll the project while its free, estimating the cost at no more than RM2 million.
While we believe this move is excellent considering Peninsula Malaysia has a penetration rate of 4% , Lim Kit Siang asks if its even feasible. Without being condescending, how many people even have a computer, or can afford a modem? And at just RM1 - 2 million, as Taib put it, the cost seems exceedingly cheap. Curiously, no mention was made about the initial investment to be made by the Government.
