Samsung Malaysia Electronics (SME) Sdn Bhd today announced the launch of Samsung Omnia (model name: SGH-i900). It brings together high performance business content, top of the range style and a fun, dynamic multi-media experience, to ensure consumers are always connected both at home and at work. , meaning ‘everything’ in Latin and ‘wish’ in Arabic, goes beyond the current top-of-the-line features available in today’s mobile phones.

Bringing a PC environment to Mobile The new Samsung allows users to switch seamlessly between Microsoft Outlook email and productivity applications that replicate the look and feel of their PC - with a stroke of their finger. Based on the most up to date Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional operating system, Samsung gives users a mobile extension to their PC experience, with access to MS Office documents such as PowerPoint, Excel and Word. Users can also send and receive email and manage their appointments in Outlook while on the go.

The Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional operating system means users can download additional programs as they would on their PC and customize it for their individual needs. For ease of navigation, an optical mouse similar to those on laptop computers offers improved usability and one-handed control.

Vivid, lively multimedia experience

Samsung Omnia delivers the ultimate in digital entertainment thanks to a wide 3.2-inch WQVGA LCD screen for viewing videos and slide shows in high-resolution and advanced audio capabilities. MultiCodec support for DivX, Xvid and other video formats eliminates the hassle of file format conversions. Users also have the assurance of a long-life detachable battery for extended playback.

The Samsung Omnia also comes with a five-megapixel CMOS camera with the latest value-added features, which include auto-focus (AF), face and smile detection and auto-panorama shot. The handset’s generous internal memory (available in 8GB or 16 GB capacity options and extendable slot for additions) ensures ample storage space for digital assets. Rounding out the fully comprehensive feature set, Samsung Omnia also offers Global Positioning System (GPS), including navigation and geo-tagging capabilities, so users can get their bearings wherever work or life takes them.

The One and Only mobile with everything in touch

Samsung’s patented TouchWiz user interface makes entering data and text simple. With unique widgets, users can customise and personalise the way they use their phone. The Samsung Omnia's high resolution touch-sensitive screen uses intuitive tap, sweep, drag and drop operations as well as an on-screen qwerty keyboard. It also facilitates easy and convenient calling and texting with a dedicated dome key for controlling communications.

Samsung’s pursuit for design perfection

The Samsung Omnia presents Samsung’s leadership in design. With maxi-phone capabilities, it boasts a slender, chic form, so users can step out in style. It features an ultra-slim 12.5-mm profile and a platinum-look finish that fits snugly in the palm of the user’s hand. The elegant hairline patterns on the back of the phone bring the perfection in style.

Wong Man Ngee, Head of Marketing, Mobile Phone Marketing, Samsung Malaysia Electronics (SME) Sdn Bhd said, “I am very excited to introduce Samsung Omnia, a mobile device that truly delivers the best possible features for today’s busy, on-the-go consumer. Samsung demonstrates our vision for the Samsung mobile business, which is to provide premium phones for users who desire functionality, style, usability and entertainment in one innovative device.

The mobile range will help users to be at the forefront of work and play and at the same time, to stay connected anytime, anywhere.” The Samsung has a recommended retail price of RM2, 799.00 (8GB) and RM2, 999.00 (16GB) and is now available in Malaysia.

I am a iphone owner and frankly, after using this, i have to switch back to iphone.

Although iphone is missing some important office app to edit excel, word etc, but, really are you going to do those things on the phone?! Think again, are you going to take out your excel at starbuck start doing some analysis with excel, write some calculation, generate some graph? I think it is so rediculous doing those thing on a phone with a super tiny keyboard, a pen to poke at it with a aweful small screen. Those thing are meant to be done on a decent screen laptop and pc. I wouldnt even considering working on it for 10mins on a laptop with 14" screen. Think ergonomic, it stretches your eye, finger, arm, sitting position... ended up carpal tunnel...

I would use the phone to search for something on internet on adhoc basis, say movie showing time, price of a printer....

Imagine 3 person sitting side by side, 1 person iphone, 1 person PDA, 1 person Omnia..

iphone is going to get the job done quickly, stylishly, zoom in out, single tap doubletap, focus so swiftly every single movement, made so user friendly.

PDA, very awkward, pull out a pen from the PDA and start poking. All the girls going to turn around and just go

Samsung, still got style because no depending on the stylus... but slower in navigating the web, it feels like you are poking with finger sometimes, alot of wait because slow in navigating, few clicks to do 1 thing... when you are done, people start to feel bored..

Well that my 2cent no offence just a couple comment, dont take it seriously cause that is my own point of view.

BTW, i am very easy in getting bored about things. iPhone software is just so expendable that everyday i could download a few new free apps to play with. Always got something interesting to show your friends. Feels like it never run out of steam. Given me something that is no so expandable, i would get bored in a few days playing with the same old thing. Think again, play with same thing everyday for a phone that you are going to keep for 6 months to 2 years. That is just so boring...

I tested the phone during CommunicAsia in SG and frankly, the system lag is unbearable. That alone the system without additional applications installed. In humble response to the this title, I'd rather be getting an iPhone =)

I rather get the iPhone rather then some WM Phones. I am having hard times with WM , at least iPhone is easier to use and you wouldn't end up to do couple of soft resets everyday. I do admit that the features aren't part with the iPhone. But an iPhone is still an iPhone

The only problems I have with PDA phones in general are the instability of the operating system, processor speed and battery life. I would call is a miracle if a phone would be able to eliminate the problems.

During the press conference (PC), the phone actually ran out of memory during the product demo but that was the problem of too many apps opened. Seeing the way it scrolled, it was kinda... slow. But it could prolly be fixed with some minor tweaks.

On a side note: I'm using an HP iPAQ 910 BM and it's awesome.

if it's a WM6.1 / Windows Mobile, it's prone to stability issue that users will crave for it to be ironed out in the soon to release WM6.1 firmware releases..
better wait and see how things go.

iphone with or without 3G is nothing more than an overpriced fashion phone -- somebody might be able to come up with a better term, but with the limitation being the user need to take it out from the pocket, staring at the screen just to operate is indeed for show, at least to me.
full touchscreen-controlled phone without tactile feedback is more of a for-show-feature than a handy useful feature.

This would be a dream phone for the people who want the best of both worlds - Rich Multimedia and unbound connectivity. I am yet to test it out though, but going thru the spoecifications this indeed is impressive and a breakthru in the mobile technology.I had almost made up my mind on getting the iphone, but this just came in time. The price is a little expensive and Samsung should seriously consider revising it. They have mastered the technology behind this miracle, so might as well get the quantity out there in the market and give the competitors a reason to work harder.SAMSUNG - Drop the price and this will be one of the biggest contributor to your revenue numbers.happy-smiley Anyways, hats off guys for this fantastic gadget.thumbsup

During the press conference, Chapree.LYN posed a question to Samsung: "Is Samsung launching the Omnia to battle against the iPhone?"

The product manager of Samsung replied: "Nope. Omnia and iPhone are both in 2 different category so should not be compared."

Then I asked Chapree: "Then how come they keep on hyping it up as a multimedia phone again and again?"...
