For those of you who happily torrent stuff, you'd better start being careful. Seems like our 'friendly' Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry will be cracking down on such activities pretty soon. Considering that pirated software vendors have are almost non-existent in our regular IT centres, it's not really surprising that downloaders were next on the list. 

According to the report from The Star, If you download material illegally from the Internet, you can be fined a minimum of RM250,000 while the maximum fine is RM500,000. Actually this penalty was legislated more than 10 years ago under the Copyright Act, but it has yet to be fully enforced.

According to Deputy Minister Datuk S. Veerasingam, cracking down on Internet download offenders was also gaining momentum. If the government is start to get serious about it, we might start hearing the first charges to be filed against downloaders in the next couple of months. It'll be interesting to see what happens then.

Comment: Proxy and tunnelling software works for now. Not to mention of some ppl using VPN to torrent. For me I think they're not able to track VPN/proxy communications. But one thing is possible is that they can launch investigations on houses/ppl who uses lots of bandwidth for say one month. They've been logging our bandwidth on the Streamyx bills. Maybe they can start off by logging everyone's internet who uses > 50gb bandwidth a month or so. They could also track people who download the .torrent files and track the bandwidth changes after the download. But then its Malaysia. It could very well be a new division of kopi-o. Lol. But I think it's more of a money generating scheme for the country. Think. If you download illegally, you don't pay a cent to the country except the RM66/77/88 to streamyx. But if you were to purchase the pirated DVD's at about RM5 of which the disc is also manufactured in M'sia, you're helping the economy. And people rarely share DVD's that they buy. They will purchase their own copy. It adds more money to the country. Lol! And then also quoting from The Star's article, “We will also very soon make Internet download offenders our priority,” he said." How soon is "soon" ?

Then there are other ways of "tunnelling" thru the streamyx. Everyday I see those TM technicians fidling trying to slow down my speed, but with 3rd party service, 100% dl data is always achievable.
