Downloaders Beware
(148 votes)

For those of you who happily torrent stuff, you'd better start being careful. Seems like our 'friendly' Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry will be cracking down on such activities pretty soon. Considering that pirated software vendors have are almost non-existent in our regular IT centres, it's not really surprising that downloaders were next on the list.

Image

According to the report from The Star, If you download material illegally from the Internet, you can be fined a minimum of RM250,000 while the maximum fine is RM500,000. Actually this penalty was legislated more than 10 years ago under the Copyright Act, but it has yet to be fully enforced.

According to Deputy Minister Datuk S. Veerasingam, cracking down on Internet download offenders was also gaining momentum. If the government is start to get serious about it, we might start hearing the first charges to be filed against downloaders in the next couple of months. It'll be interesting to see what happens then.

Actually this whole thing a bit bluff... you see we pay the ISP and the ISP pay the Gov in terms of tax, so if we use less of what the ISP provide, the Gov get less. And they crack down on DVD's is because we pay DVD vendors but they don't pay gov for tax... haha

The government should find a way to educate users on piracy software, instead of just saying to fine software downloaders....

Would suggest that government to liaise with software provider to lower down their price for softwares...

Eg.1 current price for

MS Office +/- RM850 to RM1750
x Original licence user 20,000 (incl. commercial)
= max RM35 million

to cut down to RM100 to RM200
x PC Users 500,000 (incl. commercial)
= min RM50 million

Definitely the option 2 will be more profitable... don't you agree...

This is just for assumption purposes... simple calculation...

Think about it before you react. It is NOT illegal to download software. It IS illegal to install/use software without a license. All they can do is (what already happens in some countries) get the ISPs to block torrent traffic. If they do that, someone will come up with another solution.

what i want to tell is this:

the freaking government should ban those who UPLOADED those files for us to download and should ban download client either P2P(peer to peer) network or torrent clients alike e.g. Limewire, Mp3 rocket, Bittorent, Ares GAlaxy or BitComet......

BTW, we also have an alternative source for illegal downloads--CyberCafes--

To my beHATED government organization,

We're not stupid, if you all really want to ban illegal downloads in Malaysia until finish, then ban Cyber Cafes in Malaysia from working (poor and d@mned government)

Yes, about time to enforce it and attempt to stop piracy; It will be good for the IT economies so that talented Malaysian application developers can find a living without worrying about their products got stolen. Those of you who can't afford original stuff, just don't think about it and spend your time on somewhere else.

our goverment had shown us how stupid they are again. ridiculously impressive.

they are so willing to waste their time to fine some one 250K to 500K for illegal downloading rather then spend their time to solve criminals on the street and give us a peaceful live. funnyly, rapist, robber and other criminals are getting lighter punishment then these illegal downloader. blue-smiley

how would our stupid government expect majority people which are low income to buy original software which going to cost almost 1/3 or half our monthly salary for a piece of potentially crap software?! why dont the trading miniter utilise his brain well?!

besides, if you wanna solve this thing, solve it from the root. why would you target those downloader instead of the providers?! there are millions of downloader out there. how many you can catch?! does this helps your economy? NO! does this help malaysia to be more advance in IT? definitely a NO! will this kill off TMNut? well, YES!!!

i feel so ashamed to have such useless gohment. i bet you all feel the same way too. too bad nothing we do about it. just hope that they dont really take action. if they do, malaysia is screwed.

plis lar bro my gohment, use your brain, serve the people well with genorousity and care and you'll be loved. else if like this, you'll be cursed!!!

Best option to stop it is to block the torrent providers. Where the content should be screened and decided on the legal status there. Block 1 copy there, would mean, blocking thousand of downloads.

It is hard to find, prosecute and prove downloaders. Any downloaders can just say that the the legality of the content is not possible to be known until download is completed and partial viewing. In addition there are so many free materials online that is really available for free. So how to prosecute?

I think it will be after election, too much heavy weight items going on, and popular support needed. Gomen is also looking for extra income (fines) and it will be a way to reduce internet traffic by removing "heavy users". Not limited to torrent too. Notice also "Illegal content", what is it? Is it just copyright or inclusive of things gomen don't want you to see? It will come. question is when, how, in what form, who gets it?

Software? move to FOSS. Content, go for creative common's stuff.
